Got a task to clean up some small business infrastructure. Some 30 PCs, and 8 spagetti servers. KVM's, MX's regular pages, DB's services and what else. Really big mess. And moreover, nobody has an idea, how all this thing works.
I have just some Webmin and Docker experience. So i decided to take step further and to do research on 21st century good practices. It came out that if you have 5+ blades, you should start look into Proxmox or OpenStack. So i picked up OpenStack and OpenShift to deep dive. I wanted to start small with only 1-2 bare metal blades and my Power Workstation with lot of RAM and CPU's so i can run additional VMs to play with. After installing OpenStack and OpenShift on bare metal few times i felt there should be better way to do this. So i found info about Ansible Tower, AWX and TripleO and little bit lost. Still can't get difference between Ansible Tower/AWX and TripleO? My idea is that i manage all those blades from home via some Director (Tower/AWX), install OpenStack on first node, then OpenShift on top of 1st node OpenStack. Then i do some test deployments. Simple web sites with DB's. If everything goes well on just 1 node, i do want to expand the same setup on more 7 blades and want to manage all those 8 nodes from my... kinda lost in terminology.
Also, it looks like OpenShift itself doesn't run as container and do not share underlying OS with OpenStack. For me it looks like resource waste as OpenShift itself should be installed on OpenStack VM.
