Session 1 - The use of Earth Observation data and geospatial technology to support decision-making in local municipality areas | Space for Climate Action Training 2023 | Provided by the South African National Space Agency (SANSA)

Earth observation (EO) data, in particular, satellite imagery, plays an important role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. EO data provides valuable information required to understand human activities and the natural environment. The aim of this training is to create awareness of the use of EO data and geospatial technologies to support evidence-based decision-making at the district and local municipality levels. The training will provide participants with practical applications of remote sensing and other geospatial data in spatial planning, disaster and natural resource management at a district or local municipality level, with a focus on South Africa and potential applications around the world.

This online course consists of two sessions. Session 1 introduces the basics of GIS and remote sensing and its applications in local government. Session 2 provides hands-on practical training on data visualization and analysis using QGIS.
