The "hotel capsules" in Japan had been written in many enciclopedias as architecture wonder of 20th century. RIP.

Lets just be happy we lived in an age were this existed and we have people like John to document it for future generations to enjoy.

Thanks for live-streaming the progress of the building demolition. This is one of my favorite buildings in Tokyo and from the Metabolists movement.
6:30 The original design of the building layout was to allow any capsule to be removed in any order but, due to budget, the capsules can only be removed from the very top.
*Fun fact you can see the Nakagin building from Hamarikyu garden framed by a distant tree (looking from south of the Garden office)

As an architectural buff, I remember when it was begun. I'm pleased they will preserve some of the pods for the public to visit.

Thanks John, I feel that though some people may underestimate the significance of certain things, those things have left cultural and social imprints that mean different things to different people. Japan has so many aspects to it, I love it for that, there’s so many rabbit holes to dive into and learn about.
Architecture and aesthetics for one, has had huge influence internationally.

Hi John, I walked past here on my last Japan trip in 2019 and was completely startled. Took tons of pics thank goodness. It reminds me a bit of Habitat 67 at Expo67 in Montreal. Modular was going to be the new thing.

Just Google pictures of the inside and it really does looks like a capsule from the 70's and 80's very retro 🖖

John, in grade school, I read that the Nakagin tower had been completed. I was fascinated, such an iconic image. I am bummed it is being removed yet relieved many of the capsules will be saved. Maybe some of the owners will list theirs on Airbnb. If that happens I can imagine that will be very popular.

Cool architecture. John, any chance of doing a followup of removed capsules used to build new habitats elsewhere in Japan? Thank you!

You are right about no wrecking ball. Sad to see it go. Would be nice to find out where we can see it when we return to Japan. Thanks for the stream.

Being in construction myself, Ive seen roofers using ladders on top of ladders that were wobbly 😳 seeing that they rope themselves off is very smart especially making the scaffolding that high!

I heard the capsules are being sold off or sent to museums, any idea how much one costs?

This makes me very sad. During my visits (hopefully more visits soon!) to Tokyo I always made a point to visit Nagakin and sort of pay my respects to an architecture that was daring and visionary. I'm sure it will be replaced by a bland, generic megabox of glass.

I first saw this capsule hotel in your very old capsul hotel video of 2014. It looked so cool. I always wished to go and have a one night stay. Too bad, this wish will be unfulfilled. Anyway, Good job John.

This whole time I’m wondering what this building reminds me of. Then you mention laundromat and I think, “duh, washing machines, of course.” 😂

I'm glad I got to see it before it got disassembled. I wish they would replace it with some other unique futuristic design. It was certainly unique and very photogenic.

29:50 "Is that Peter?" 🤣🤣 That was so funny. Sad to know The Nakagin is going to be no more. Wish we were able to see it, my husband is a major architect nerd.
