Both were fantastic. The people watching the series on reruns generally prefer Jefferson, and the later seasons. But for those of us who watched it in real-time, the first four seasons were unbelievably subversive and groundbreaking, and Steve was a big part of it.

Both were great characters performed by really good actors. I'm on team Jefferson though because I like the dynamic he created. He gave al a friend and partner in crime rather than another antagonist.

For me it's a tie: I'm more inclined to the early years, and Steve was the right fit. However, for the latter seasons Jefferson got along with Al with ease and their good chemistry on-screen was evident

I loved them both for different reasons. I also like how Marcy's character evolved between her 2 marriages showing how each experience effected her. It was kinda relatable in a weird way
