MY AMPUTATION STORY:

Fourteen years of pain and failed ankle surgeries brought me to 2018, when I made the difficult decision to become a twenty-seven-year-old below-the-knee elective amputee. This channel is to document my journey of amputation surgery, recovery, and reclaiming my life.

So I love that all my international subscribers have pointed out to me that what I called “normal” crutches are NOT normal most places outside the U.S.! That’s awesome to know!! 💜 Thanks for pointing that out to me. Here in the states pretty much everyone is sent home with the underarm crutches and those are sold more widely! 🇺🇸

In the Netherlands we have forearm crutches that have a circle that goes around your arms, so it doesn't 'let go' from your arms at all? And you can let them go when standing and they won't fall. When I had knee trouble, I used them forever, and they were great! Fun fact though: what you call 'normal crutches' are not used in the Netherlands at all! I've literally only seen them on tv and youtube hahah

Hope this helps.

Forearm crutches are easier but the ones you have can be difficult, the top part where the forearm rests should be completely round so you can slide your arm into a type of ring shape at the top of the crutch, it automatically makes you feel a lot more steady. It’s also not tight at all so doesn’t feel uncomfortable. 😊

I’m good at using forearm crutches. I am not an amputee but I do have hip Dysplasia so I do need crutches quite a lot but here in the uk we don’t have your ‘normal crutches’ forearms crutches are normal for us they are what are given to us from the hospital if we Break a leg or have an operation. Also I love you, you are so brave and are such an inspiration!.❤️

My brother in law has used forearm crutches since he lost his left leg 40 years ago. He lost his hip on down and could not comfortably use a prosthesis. He swears by them and says they ultimately are far better to use than regular crutches. Actually, in a race he usually would beat me running down the block ! On the plus side you will develop superior upper body and arm strength and even possibly an athletic build, strong broad shoulders and strong arms 💪🏼

Maybe try closed forearm crutches. They give more support around the arm and can hang round the arm while you do stuff like get out your bank card to pay. Closed arm crutches are standard when you receive nhs care in the UK and very common over here.

I just went through an amputation below the knee and Jo's video was not only uplifting but it also made me smile :)) God bless you Jo, you are such an inspiration and a beautiful person too!

The forearm crutches are very common in Europe :-) It seems to me that you just need to use some different muscles than with the ones you have. Might be a good arm/shoulder workout actually. I suggest you take the challenge! :-) #becareful

Irish gal here! We only ever get the forearm crutches here, and I really recommend putting some padding on the hand grips of the forearm crutches. I have only used them for a few weeks at a time but I found my hands get extremely painful when putting my weight down on them so getting some sort of padding really helps me with the pain of that!

Lovely lip color! It looks great on you! 🌟
Forearm crutches are the norm in Europe....they’re great! You can buy padding for the handles and forearm rests as well.

Fellow newbie amputee here. I've used the same mobility devices to get around as you have, with the exception of the iWalk 2.0, I'll be ordering that soon. I prefer using my wheelchair and "regular" crutches to get around my house. I'm fortunate that my doorways allow me access with my wheelchair. I enjoy your videos. Keep up the great work!!

Hey Jo, you are such a rockstar!! I have forearm crutches they are amazing. I would deffo keep them and just keep practicing. Try holding them closer to your body, check they are the right hight for your body. Have an amazing time in Ireland! Loving the lipstick. You can totally pull it off x

In England we use forearm crutches as our regular crutches and a tip I have for use is make sure that you have the right height and wrap fluffy socks around the hand holds so that your hands don’t hurt after a while xx

Forearm crutches are actually the normal ones in Germany, I guess both crutches have their own perks, but I think it's quite interesting that there are regional differences in what type of crutches are common. Hope you are getting used to your new ones quickly❤

Forearm crutches just take time to get used to! I was unstable on them when I first got mine, but after a bit of practice I honestly fell in love with my forearm crutches. They help so much with back pain from the regular crutches too!

i used forearm crutches just one to get around for years but now with my amputation i am really unsteady on them. I use a wheelchair in the house a tiny one to fit thru my doors. I used the knee scooter but i tend to want to go to fast on it and crash. Great video. Amputee Store has these sticky cushy pads that could work for the iwalker. I am using them in my prosthetic because my shin bone has healed with a bump on the end and they can not grind my prosthetic anymore.

the one time I had to use crutches, 14 years ago minor foot injury, I got the forearm ones...I found the surprisingly easy to use....I think in that matter it's about with which one you feel comfortable...
Loved the lipstick!!! and glad to see Sadie is all well!!

I have similar crutches. I added lightweight, loose elastics around the forearm part for my crutches allowing to utilize my Elbow to crutch for stability allow an open hand. It took months for them to feel more natural/secure than other aids. The elastics definitely made a huge difference for how I felt using my crutches

The wheeled chair is a “transport” chair. They aren’t really meant for you to wheel yourself. They are usually cheaper and easier to transport than a standard manual wheelchair with larger back wheels. I, too, am just learning to use forearm crutches. I’ve been told they are better than a cane or trek poles for my condition, and that they are a good alternative to my walker if I want to go on easy nature trails. Mine don’t have to be totally weight-bearing as I use them more for stability. I did get the ones with closed cuffs so they are harder to drop. That was a big problem with my canes because I have problems with my upper extremities as well as my lower.
