In a parallel configuration, each capacitor is connected to the source and will charge fully so the equivalent capacitance is the sum of the individual capacitor values. In series, calculating equivalent capacitance involves finding the inverse of the sum of the inverses of individual values. When calculated properly, the total capacitance of multiple capacitors in series will be less than the capacitance of the lowest capacitor value.
