The charge current is given by I = 1200/Rprog. The TP4056 has a maximum current rating of 1.2A, which means that Rprog must not be less than 1K. It is therefore essential to put a 1K resistor in series with the potentiometer, because it is too easy to slip and turn the pot down to a small resistance, risking damage to the module and battery.
If you use LiR2032, the rechargeable equivalent of CR2032, they like a charging current of around 40mA, so it may be sensible to use a 20K or 25K potentiometer which will bring the charging current down to a sensible value for small batteries.

I started my electronics journey as a hobbyist just last summer, where I designed (with the help of ChatGPT) a small circuit to power a tiny fan to put under my hat, so my head is cooled in the summer. I used a 3.7V LiPo battery with TP4056 and a step-up module to 5V to power the fan. It was SUCH a chore to desolder that resistor with my cheap, crappy soldering iron! You did it in 6 seconds, but it took me more than an hour! Since then I upgraded to an infinitely better soldering station and I'm having fun soldering!

Good solution. Better is a multi step switch with different resistors. But this is great!

It's excellent. We can also use a multi-turn potentiometer for more precision. Another option is a multi-position switch, with a quarter-watt resistor suitable for the desired current in each position.
I really like this module; I use it often It is available in mini USB, micro USB, or USB-C. 👍
When I need the connector to be very resistant to handling, I choose the mini USB one.

Love the new content you make now days, hope this channel gets back the attention it deserves 👏

Thank you. That takes the guesswork out of potentially overcharging batteries.

These modules are great for all sorts of projects that you want to include a rechargeable battery. However, if you want it to output max 1 amp, say if you have two cells in parallel, I found you need to provide some sort of heatsink on the charge chip. If you do not do this, the chip will self regulate and drop the charge current to a lower figure.

Another great video! Keep doing what you are doing and I'll keep watching!

Very useful! Just a correction to your project: you should put a 1, 2k resistor in series with potentiometer, because if you set it to zero you could burn the module. because of too high current.

Very good idea!!! Never thought of it.

I had the same idea after seeing a bigclive video about the module, and made one a few months ago as my first project after retirement.
I had a much harder time soldering those wires onto the module after removing the resistor.
I put aligator clips on it so I could charge different batteries without resoldering.

thanks for always having great content.

Wrong! Maximum charge voltage of this type of batteries is 4.2V! More = overcharge.

Even though you show documentation, you clearly break its essential limits. Very dangerous solution. The resistance of the potentieter can go until zero!

You can this same idea for other circuits and components like the ZENER DOODE.❤

Shouldn't you leave a 1200 ohm resistor in line with the potentiometer so it couldn't send more than 1 amp?

I have never tried shorting out the 1200 ohm resistor on the board and seeing what would happen to the amperage and what would heat up

hello, that what i expect when i see the title, good idea, but one things and i do not not know if will be a probleme or not, because the potentiometer have a resistance and the cable too ! is it efficient ?

I use a 2-pin header and swap resistors to change current.

wow, if you happen to have a small capacity battery, say 100mAh or 500mAh and you try to put 1, 000mAh charging current into it, you will need to have a fire extinguisher handy and bucket of sand for all the stuff now on fire. Anyway we do like these videos :)
