Conjuring Fire from Electricity using Old Forgotten Science

Exploring the real-life sorcery of creating a 10 MHz plasma flame with a High Frequency Vacuum Tube Tesla Coil (HFVTTC).

A HFVTTC is a base-fed, self-resonant, radio frequency oscillator. The configuration of the circuit used in this video is essentially a Class E amplifier. Instead of producing large amounts of radio frequency radiation, however, a spark is drawn at the tip of the resonator coil (i.e., "antenna") and most of the energy is dissipated as heat and light into a self-sustaining plasma flame / spark which completes the circuit through capacitive coupling back to ground, the same as with the sparks of normal Tesla coils. This circuit is powered by a microwave oven transformer and uses an Eimac 4-250A transmitting tetrode.

The spark / plasma flame is lethal and should never be touched under any circumstances. The output of this type of "base-fed" Tesla coil has a low impedance path straight to the microwave oven transformer, which is lethal. Also, at these high frequencies, EMI/RFI is a large concern and may damage nearby electronics. Much more so than "normal" Tesla coils. A dedicated RF ground is needed. Capacitive coupling of high voltages to nearby metal surfaces is also likely, producing possibly dangerous shocks or RF burns if these surfaces are touched. This is an advanced high voltage project and is much more dangerous than most normal Tesla coils. So again, do not try this yourself!
