Smooth-Sharp Hillshade: An Ambient Lighting Terrain Effect (hack) for ArcGIS Pro

This is my half-hour of cartographic tomfoolery for the rambunctious day-long How To Do Map Stuff extravaganza coordinated by Daniel Huffman. Here's a rundown of everybody's talks, which you should definitely check out:
See you April 29!

P.S. Smooth-Sharp Hillshading? Well, it was either this or some crap about felt or cross-stitch so this is what I went with.

After this demo, head right over to Kate Leroux's demo for making 3D printed terrain maps! The map-fun rolls on. Here's the link to that for your extreme convenience:

You are incredibly talented John! Amazing work! It has really re-ignited my passion for cartography and makes me want to go further with my project goals and learn more. I'm heading to San Diego for my very first UC after being in the GIS field for 18 years. Would love the opportunity to meet you! Looking forward to your session. Great video! Cheers!

Congratulations John, really in ArcGIS Pro, you achieve excellent results, in raster processing, with exquisite results. For my case, I applied the value, of scale factor, for the South of Argentina, based on the Esri site. 👌

I use QGIS but it’s still a great reference!!

This is a wonderful tutorial! My challenge is that my area of interest spans 4 DEMs (n34w112, n34w113, n33w112 & n33w113). I need to make these adjacent tiffs blend together. Do you have any suggestions for how to make these work together without a black cross between the DEMs?

Thank you so much for doing this tutorial. It's really helpful.

Hi John, what is the final layer in ArcGIS Pro that you exported to the image for using in Ai software latter? Thank you very much!

Is the blend operation the only way to get some arbitrary color ramp DEM to appear over a black & white hillshade without making the original DEM partially transparent? That is if I have some black & white hillshade and I want to drape the original color ramp DEM over it, is blending the only option? ArcMAP seemed to be able to do this out of the box (it combined several operations into a singular little checkbox on the symbology menu) but I can't find a way ro get Pro to do it.

By blend modes do you mean that pro is finally getting the ability to use the "multiply" effect on multiple rasters? Been using Qgis to get this done for years

What a lovely idea, maybe you can make or recommend someone to make a raster function automatically processing the step you make, then you can name it yourself😀👍 or "realistic hillshade?", very good job.
A question, do the arcgis pro have the blend mode yet?

What layers would you change if you wanted to add some color to the map like Sean's maps?

Great. The only thing I find disturbing is that the focal statistics mess with the outline of the DEM, so it's not really feasible to apply it to the DEM of an island. The shore is full of overlapping circles.

Hi John, great stuff and I really enjoyed the Esri Training MOOC course on Cartography. Where did you get the imagery of Michigan at 27:49?

Hi John.
Do you know why even though I already have the NASA login, it doesn't let me download the dem from the site you download it from? Thank you

This is beautiful! Also bright: my map becomes so dark when using all these layered gradients. Also I have some 1 DEM resolution and the "hillshade on slope" seems super crazy depending on the zoom level I use, any advice for 'calming' that down and lightening it up?

Great stuff John! I can't wait to try this! Pro tends to have a lot of friends with a lot of beer, hanging out during GP tools 😂
