THE BEST OF ART PEPPER (FULL ALBUM)

Art Pepper (Arthur Edward Pepper Jr., Gardena, California, September 1, 1925 – Los Angeles, California, June 15, 1982), was an American alto saxophonist.

He began his career in the 1940s, playing with Benny Carter and Stan Kenton (1946-52). By the 1950s Pepper was recognized as one of the leading alto saxophonists in jazz, epitomized by his finishing second only to Charlie Parker as Best Alto Saxophonist in the Down Beat magazine Readers Poll of 1952. Along with Chet Baker, Gerry Mulligan and Shelly Manne, and perhaps due more to geography than playing style, Pepper is often associated with the musical movement known as West Coast jazz, as contrasted with the East Coast (or "hot") jazz associated with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. Pepper was a member of Buddy Rich's Big Band from 1968 to 1969, and in 1977 and 1978 made two well received tours of Japan...

I was blessed to be able to see some of his last performances. In 1980 or 81 he was doing THE SUMMER ARCO JAZZ SERIES. I'd seen him live at the Bonaventure Hotel and at Exposition Park in Los Angeles. A resent GOOGLE search brought it all back. I'd searched his name in the mid-90's and learned that he was a local person from Gardena California. I discover that I'd attended some of his last performances as he passed away in 1882.

Everything by Art is heavenly. Wish he would have lasted longer. He was the peak of jazz.

Although he's often compared to players like Desmond and Lee Konitz, his sound is much brighter here (and often elsewhere like with Buddy Rich). He has that little chirp that I actually love. The pic above shows him playing a metal mouthpiece. He is usually associated with the hard rubber Runyon pieces. Anybody have an idea what mouthpiece this is? Berg Larsen?

For my money the greatest sax player of all time. He mixed bop timing/phrasing with a beautiful West "cool" sound in a way that no one else ever did.

Random question for sax nerds: did Art ever play altissimo? I keep trying to find an excuse to play in that range but it seems like none of the players I like ever used it!

Is it possible to buy this particular album somewhere - or is it just selections put together by CoolJazz?

Nice, but as a solid East Coast Jazz fan, I guess I have a bias.
