This isn't a "genius move", it is standard counter-espionage practice. No doubt he had someone in IT security suggest this to him.

That's also how you find out who has been talking about you. You tell everyone a slightly different version of a story. Then you find out what version gets told and ultimately find out who is doing the telling.

4 kids weren’t prepared for a test on Monday so they made up a lie and told the teacher they were on a road trip and a tire blew out and that they won’t make it to school monday. The teacher proceeds to say no problem at all. You can all make the test up on Friday. Friday comes and the 4 kids sit down to take the test. After studying all week due to not being prepared they were able to fly through the test. On the very last page the final question stated,

Moral of the story. Always rewrite the email you are leaking . Also better don't leak the email in which you are the only recipient. LOL

This is actually exactly how one of my teachers in middle school found the girl who was writing mean things in my school planner while I would be at lunch. She pulled a pop spelling quiz and one of the words was "cool" cause she would always spell cool like "Kool". Sure enough it was the girl I thought it was and she got called to the principles office and never bothered me again xD
