Shabby Chic Style? NOPE! Russel Wright Conant Ball Maple Surfboard Table Restoration #furnitureflip

My client came to me with this table that she had bought at a local antique store awhile back. The design didn’t align with her current style, so she requested to have it restore which was really smart in her part since its worth $$$ restored! I was shocked how good it came out considering my last experience with solid maple, lol!

Here’s how I restored it 👇🏼
+ used QCS stripper, let it sit for 15 minutes, scraped off with putty knife
+ sanded off rest of old finish with 120 grit
+ did one round of oxalic acid to remove any dark spots in the maple
+ stained with one coat General Finishes Prairie Wheat and one coat Old Masters Pecan
+ hid small repairs with blendal sticks
+ seal repairs with semi-gloss satin lacquer!

I love this one!! Hopefully this inspires a few of you to find out what’s underneath a painted piece of furniture and bring it back to it’s former glory!

I'll never forget the beautiful art deco headboard that my dad and I restored that was coated in layers of shabby chic chalk paint junk
It took a long time but eventually we revealed the absolutely stunning striped maple wood with geometric inlay borders.
I can't stress enough how beautiful this piece is, the maple has this shimmer that makes it look like a giant piece of tiger eye stone

Every time someone paints over beautiful wood, I die a little inside. Your content is healing.

I bought a gorgeous carved oak Victorian over door which had been covered in white gloss paint. It too a while to strip and restore but now it is proudly on display in my Victorian dining room

I live in a rural area of Tennessee, and vintage furniture comes in 2 options: ready for the trash or chalk painted beyond recognition. You're doing the lawd's work lol

At almost 70, it really is true things come back around. So glad to see more appreciation for natural wood stain - and recognition that while painting may be quicker, some pieces deserve extra effort.

Ahh we’re finally in the era where people are realizing maybe it wasn’t a good idea to thrift flip every piece of wood furniture

So wonderful to see restoration and removal of paint instead of people painting furniture

i’m so thankful to see this instead of all the tiktoks of people painting already beautiful furniture really unnecessarily 😭 do what you want at the end of the day but i feel like we live in an era where people cant just accept the simple beauty of for example a wood table they have to go through so much extra effort

You're out here single handedly fixing all the bad chalk paint victims one piece at a time!

My grandmother used to work for this furniture manufacturer as a sander. Finding this piece and restoring this is amazing.

How did you determine that it’s maple wood? I’d love to see a video showing how to identify the different types of woods and what types of finishes would be better on each

My wife gave tours for years in Russel Wright's house, Manitoga. It's on the Hudson in New York. He was a genius at simple, functional design. Thanks for the effort to bring back an American treasure. Maple can be super-tricky as you implied. You did it all right.

I can't believe anyone would paint on this beautiful wood. So glad it could be restored. Excellent job!
