How to: Measure for GLASS REPLACEMENT in VINYL frames

If you have a failed seal in your vinyl window replacing the glass only may be the most logical and economical choice.

Here is what you need to order the correct glass:

1) Width + height… usually take the “daylight” dimension and add 1” or 7/8” to be safe.
2) Overall thickness of the glass unit… combine both glass panes plus the air space. To get this pull off the “glazing bead” with a putty knife to access the cavity between the edge of glass and frame of window.
3) Glass type… if it’s built within the last 20 years it probably has some variance of a “Low-E” coating. If it’s order it most likely is just clear glass.
4) Tempered safety glass? Make sure the glass does not fall under one of the building and code required locations for tempered safety glass.

This are the four things you need to order the correct glass. To replace it in your vinyl frame, all you need to do is:
1) Remove the glazing bead (normally located on the exterior)
2) Using a putty knife, cut loose the double sided tape holding the glass to the interior frame of the window. This is done on the inside (opposite side of the glazing bead location).
3) Once freed, clean tape off of frame and apply a new piece of double sided high adhesive tape
4) Install new glass unit into frame and push against newly laid tape.
5) Re-install glazing bead.
