I believe that "gold, silver, and costly stones" is a reference to the only three things that remain: faith, hope, and love. Those are all that escape the fire and last for eternity.

The Catholics should listen to this so they will know exactly what that passage says and what it means which will show to them it does not talk about a place called purgatory. Thank you for clarifying it in great detail that will help me to explain it better next time they come and argue with me. God bless.

I thinks its a bit deeper than that...cause the foundation already laid is 44:27-28 and (ezra 1:1-2, 5:13, 17)

He's talking about the Church; which only existed after Jesus' death (The Mystery of the Church). We are considered the building blocks of the Church, the Body of Christ. If you build upon that foundation (start your own ministries, preach, etc) and preach the TRUE GOSPEL, then your 'work' (your preaching of the Gospel) will be rewarded with people who found salvation. However, if you build upon that foundation a Gospel that doesn't stick to the Truth, then you're leading people astray, despite you yourself having faith in Jesus Christ. Therefore that 'builder' will lose his 'flock', but he himself shall survive. It's absurd to think that our Lord Jesus Christ gave us everything, but will limit rewards based on what you do here on Earth. He IS Everything, if you're already receiving eternal life, why wouldn't Jesus Christ give you more? Does a believer who sacrifices his own life for a fellow brother or sister and loses everything, going to be rewarded less in Heaven and the New Earth? Does a poor person also stay poor in Heaven? That's silly. God will provide for all, there wont be a single thing you need that He wont give you.

But what is the fire? Trials? Or the presence of God?

Why do some Catholics use 1 Corinthians 3:15 as proof of purgatory?
