The Outlaw's Last Orbit - A Star Wars: Remnant Fan Film

In the untamed reaches of the Maren Sector, the populace depends on rangers to safeguard their way of life. Among these valiant guardians, some unite to form squadrons and commando teams, while others work alone….

Thank you for watching The Outlaw’s Last Orbit - A Star Wars Fan Film! For this short, I wanted to do a scene that featured some sort of blaster fight, rather than a space battle like I typically do. I drew heavy inspiration from the Marty Robbins song “Big Iron” as well as spaghetti westerns - many people will no doubt notice similarities between The Ranger in this short and Clint Eastwood’s Man With No Name (special thanks to EC Henry for helping design the helmet!).

Also, I did all of the voices in the scene.

I hoped you enjoyed the new style I’ve gone with for this video. While it’s certainly not something I’ve invented, it’s a style I’ve been testing out and tinkering with for almost a year now. After doing a test scene with this style in October 2023 and posting it to my Patreon with positive feedback, I decided to try doing it with a “full” video for the YouTube channel. An excerpt from my Patreon post explaining why I decided to test this style out is below:

In essence, I'm trying to develop a style that allows me to still tell stories in an engaging way using audio and visuals, while lowering the time and cost of production. Here, I'm rendering out separate elements as stills and then doing a 3D camera move in After Effects in order to give the still renders some life.

Without having to fully animate character scenes and letting the voice acting do the work, I can do things faster and tell more stories. I'd still like to have fully animated segments for things such as space battles, and this is one test of many in order to try and blend those different styles together so that it isn't distracting.

Some might wonder why I decided to go down this path, since I already released something that was fully animated. While I'm proud of the work I did on Ambush at Derra IV, it was an incredibly taxing and slow process. Having everything be fully animated would be the goal, but ultimately, I don't have the time or resources to animate all of the stories I want to tell. So, this is one way I could potentially do that.

I *LOVE IT* When people let Star Wars embrace it's Wild West influence. I've never been as big a fan of the Jedi-Force-Destiny racket as I am about stories about outlaw smugglers, bounty hunters and lawmen, folks just trying to survive in the Outer Rim where the Republic and Empire can't be bothered.

Love the ranger design and the inclusion of the Y-wing scout. Great job!

Your ranger design has gotta be one of the coldest designs in Star Wars. Still not 100% sure if he’s a droid or not, but either way he’s cool AF. Awesome video! Looking forward to more in this style. This had so much character as always!

I love this style. A lot. It has a great book and storytelling feel. More of this!

Not a fan of the slow motion (But it was good during the standoff scene) but it is the best Star Wars fan film I’ve seen in a while. Keep up the good work! ;)

This was fantastic. The character's mask I actually really liked. And overall it was a simple story but even though short it was well written. Keep up the good work.

It feels like something Tartakovsky would cook up. It's got the pacing, the scant dialogue, the visuals doing the all the heavy lifting. *chefs kiss* <3

Been a Spaghetti Western fan since college back in early 2000's (when that's all I watched in the dorm).
This really centered on that feel.
Awesome job!
Subd, and will watch for more stories!
BTW, the Ranger's aesthetic is amazing!

Regardless of the limited animation, this is some of the best storytelling I've seen in a fan film (of any property) in some time

Bro, skyforge I cannot get to your stuff faster, I didn’t know your last animation released and I’ve been subscribed for a year or two. I hope YouTube gets its stuff together and the algorithm works its magic

I like the style - there's some beautiful images in there, as a good western should. Someone mentioned preferring the western elements of Star Wars to the Jedi / Force stuff, and I agree. (Though space capital ship combat is my all time favorite - which you're outstanding at).

Always thought Star Wars needed more Wild West style stories. Great video as always.

This seems more like a motion comic than a film but still good piece of work :D

Honestly love the motion comic/slideshow-esque animation style of the on-foot segments. They convey a simplicity and speed of motion, coupled with a focus on consistent composition and quality art direction, that CGI animations can often have a difficult time replicating. The standoff and firefight are both sublime in their tension and simplicity, keeping right to-the-point with a setup and punchline delivered flawlessly, and the animation carries the weight of the scene beautifully. I'd love to see more short stories using this kind of animation. It just feels special.
