I listened to this yesterday and was awed and re-listened again today and was doubly so. This could be the greatest recording of this work in the stereo era. I thought only Russians could do this piece right, but I have to say this might even surpass Svetlanov. This is like Golovanov but in good, listenable sound.

Really not bad at all. Although one of the best conductors of the 20th century, the criticism commonly made towards Kleiber is his limited repertoire (Mozart, Beethoven, Strauss, and a few others). So what a nice surprise to hear him conducting Borodin here. And he really makes this orchestra shine. I still prefer my 1961 Decca LSO recording with Jean Martinon. Will try to tackle the Russians next. And as always - scio me nihil scire.

I have never heard this symphony before this summer. This recording came up as a suggestion on Amazon Music HD. I love Carlos Kleiber, so gave it a shot, and immediately was grabbed by the drama and excitement of this cinematic symphony. Amazon had several recordings of this symphony and none came close - wrong tempo, wrong phrasing, dull recording. Only Carlos got it right. The other recordings and conductors made this piece sound mediocre. That explains why I haven't heard it. If I was a movie director, like Quentin Tarantino, who builds his movies around the music, I would surely incorporate this piece in a noir-suspense-thriller movie. This recording of this symphony keeps you on the edge of your seat.
