I love Dulce. Mans was really talking about being criticized by black people for swimming and surfing and she was like "yeah, some of us listend to maroon 5 and..." 😂😂😂

2:28 free surf lessons in Coney Island is one of the most amazing things I’ve ever heard. That can really change the trajectory of someone’s life and definitely their spirit.

Nick Gabaldon was the first African American professional surfer, he taught himself to surf. Ms. Sloan it's cool that you are trying to surf.

A friend of mine asked me why it seemed like nearly all the Black contestants on _The Amazing Race_ were so absolutely terrified of water that they'd often break down into tears when faced with a water challenge. When I explained to him that segregation prevented or limited the access of Black people to public pools, and the inability to swim had perpetuated through the generations because of the cultural imprint that Blacks don't swim, he was moved almost to tears himself.

I had the opportunity to work with a similar program when I was a teenager, and it’s so great to see more of these! While I was there, though, I never actually surfed because I was too afraid of not being able to push myself up. I wish I had seen this video years ago, because I don’t think I’ve ever seen another fat woman like myself surfing before. Seeing Dulce doing it happily, even if she’s just laying on the board, gives me immense joy and makes me a little sad for my younger self who was so afraid to even try. I know that’s not what this video was about at all, but that kind of makes it even more meaningful in a way. Thank you ❤

Congratulations to Dulce for going for it! Mr. Harris is doing a wonderful job helping kids learn to surf that may not have had the opportunity to try it. I love hearing about people like him. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

My black roommate was from Wisconsin and didn’t have opportunities to learn to swim since his parents were scared of the water since they didn’t know. He wanted to break that. As an adult he took swim lessons all year and on his first 4th of July pool party where he got in the pool he was on cloud nine. We couldn’t get him out of the pool 😍
