The attack on Fort Vaux showed no importance for the final outcome of the Battle of Verdun.
Yet the bravery of the fort defenders would make the battle famous.

I've actually been to this fort twice. It's really haunting but also very interesting to visit the remains of it, I suggest anyone who visits Verdun go there.

"Dont leave us"
That were the last words transmitted to French High Command during the Battle of Fort Vaux

I love how WW1 has medieval elements, forts, hand to hand combat, one color uniforms. Its the point where combat tactics started to change.

Although the French were forced to surrender Fort Vaux in 1916, the German Fifth Army respected their enemy's defense so much that their commander Crown Prince Wilhelm, the eldest son of Kaiser Wilhelm II himself, personally visited the fort commander Major Slyvain-Eugene Raynal and gifted him with the sword of a French officer to replace the one that Major Raynal had lost during the siege. The French soldiers of Fort Vaux were so heroic that even the literal heir to the German throne honored them.

WW1 in a nutshell: Huge attacks with large casulties just to capture irrelevant position and by the time you take it your attack force is too decimated to hold it and ends up losing it to the enemy counterattack

I love the respectful exchange between the two officers after the surrender. I can picture the German General speaking to Major Raynal soldier-to-soldier in genuine respect, and the Major's response being taken with a smirk.... Like an exchange between boxers once they've left the ring

Who remembers holding the first sector for literally the entire game on Operations due to how hilariously one sided this map was towards the defense?

Inaccurate, there isn't a zombie in a prison room.

This part of the the Battle of Verdun would make a pretty gut wrenching war movie. If it were made right.
