Rehousing Demo ft. Terrestrial, Arboreal, and Fossorial Tarantulas

I've had several folks ask if I could do a video showing how to rehouse the three basic types of tarantulas (terrestrial, arboreal, and fossorial), so I figured that it was time to get 'er done!

For those who already have their rehousing down, perhaps you'll just enjoy seeing my male T. stirmi, juvenile P. vittata, and male P. crassipes. :)

Hi Tom! I know all your beginner guide videos are a couple of years old now, but I've been watching them as I prep for ordering my first T and I've found them so useful and reassuring! Just wanted to say thanks! Even though I'm buying a old world as my first (Australia, very limited in our choices) I'm feeling much more confident and ready to try it all. Thanks so much again for these vids.

Its rare to find a nice guy like you on YouTube, but its even more rare to find a Nice Guy on YouTube who is into this hobby. Great vids Tom. although you are nice in your own way, you do remind alot of tarantulaguy1976 who unfortunatly is not uploading anymore.

What i am also hinting to is: Dont quit YouTube.

Thanks for the uploads so far, they are great.

I am sorry if things are misspelled or hard to understand, im Dutch so its not my main language.

I recently purchased my first tarantula (Caribena versicolor). I've been afraid of large spiders for years, and this is a huge leap for me. Your videos are a huge help - especially hearing that you weren't always comfortable with spiders.

You forgot to mention the most important thing to have handy when transferring, the DW, Dear Wife, who helps you do what you do all the time.

If my husband used one of my kitchen spoons for his hobby, ... he would need to purchase new ones for my kitchen. grin However, since he is not in the hobby, I just pick up what I need at good will. As always, Tom, great video. thanks for making them.

I think the reason I love your channel so much is because you show a very realistic method of rehousing tarantulas. As much as I enjoy other channels' more "entertaining" rehouses they always make me a little nervous, just opening up both terrariums and poking the T vaguely in the right direction. I think they can give people the impression that this sort of thing is a lot more stressful and scary than it actually is if you just do things calmly with the right equipment. Really helpful video.

Your channel is truly a gem. I'm a 51 year old guy who's just getting back into the hobby. Growing up, and through my 20's, I've had many T's, but had to get rid of them because of my wife's fear of them. Now she's softened up a bit. So here I am. Your channel is making the re-learning curve much easier. Plus, there are so many new pieces of info that you're sharing that I had no idea of. Quick comment though; when transferring an arboreal from a tall deli cup, if you remove the bark & whatever greenery you have in it, why don't you just use the deli cup it's already in, as the "catch cup" for transfer if there's not a lot of substrate in it? If you invert the cup slowly, the gentle cascading of the substrate can act as your paintbrush, coaxing the T into it's new enclosure? Please let me know if I'm missing something. Thanks again!

Thank you so much, Tom. Your videos are really calming. I didn’t realise you were an ex-arachnophobe, too. I had to rehouse my juvie B albo today and she bolted out of her new tub and it panicked me a bit. The bottle tip at the end could have saved me all that stress. In future I’ll see if you have a video before I do anything, rather than after.

Edit: I just saw a post of yours on AB that answered my question.

As a newbie in the hobby, I find your videos very informative and useful. I hope you will not get tired of making tutorial videos.

Great video Tom:-) I have to admit there`s been a couple of incidents of me chasing small baboons and pokies across the floor. Glad I bought most of my OW Ts small, so that I get practice as they grow. What a beautiful hobby!

hey Tom just wanted to say thanks for all the great info you put out, i dont comment much but have been watching your videos for a bit now and have learned so much! I have been keeping animals, mostly exotics for many years, so i have a lot of keeping experience but i am pretty new to the tarantulas. I have been able to become a much better keeper much faster due to your video's, thank you very much! I have a collection of a 100 animals or so, tarantulas, scorpions, praying mantis and a few other cool bugs. I love the tarantulas, , but still have a lot to learn. i have apx. 40 Ts in my collection now, , and of course want many more...lol. You do a great job with you animals, i love the respect you show for the animals you keep. For me they are not pets, it is a privilege to get to keep them! and you do seem like a really nice guy! thanks again...michael

Hey there Tom, long time subscriber and podcast listener to the podcast. I think a cool topic would be the virtue of multiple hides. I have a caribena versicolor that had chosen a hide I setup in one side of the enclosure. Also, I had given her another choice too. After spending about a year and a half, she abandoned the original hiding spot and moved over to the other option. Keep up the good work bro!

Your transfer method seems so simple. I love watching your videos. You speak so clearly and you are very intelligent. For beginners in this hobby we need all the correct information so accidents do not happen. I was VERY afraid of spiders however over the summer my grandson had me catch a wolf spider he found under his bike. Since then my fear of spiders is almost gone. I plan on getting a tarantula after Christmas. I just can't decide which one to get. I want one that has some color to versus plain old brown/black T. Any recommendations on which T I should buy? I live in Maryland where we have all four seasons. I don't know if the climate of the state has anything to do with which T to buy. Thank you for making your educational videos.
