Never Buy Seeds Again - How to Collect Carrot Seeds

Knowing how to collect carrot seeds is a little more involved than typical seed saving. Carrots are biennial plants and don't flower until their second year. By planning ahead and leaving a few carrots in the ground over winter, you can reward yourself with thousands of carrot seeds.

As an Amazon affiliate I benefit from qualified purchases.

Instead of buying seed to start with, I recommend just planting a carrot top and letting it re-root. Since it's already mature, it will produce flowers that same year (instead of having to wait two years to generate flowers if you start from seed). It's better than buying seed, because if you buy a carrot, you get to eat the carrot AND you get flowers that same year!

I learn so much from YouTube, they should issue Diplomas. I am a city girl with zero gardening experience yet in a few weeks time I have learned how to grow carrots, potatoes, tomatoes, butternut, pineapple, lettuce and spinach etc. Really amazing. I like your calm demeanor, very nice channel, thank you.

I deeply appreciate the fact that u recognize the need for many to save where possible. The list of things we r told to buy, endless! The prices, outrageous!

I planted 3 carrot tops in water a few weeks ago. They sprouted and I put them in a planter with some mint. They are producing lots of flowers and the mint is also thriving! I will be using your method to collect the seeds and store them for next Spring. I intend to share them with friends, neighbours and relatives. Thanks so much for this very informative and clear video.

Hah, I piddled last year and didn't get around to harvesting everything. I didn't even know that carrots did this and low and behold the kids were very excited about the carrot flowers. We're gonna have so many seeds! Thanks for the video.

My next new word... umbrell. I can honestly say, I have never seen a carrot flower/bloom before. They look very similar to Queen Anne's lace. Great video!

Aha! I left one carrot in the bed, hoping for flowers, but had no idea it took two years! It ended up wilting, so I just pulled it. But now I know and can try again! Thank you!

I got a bunch of carrots from my employer when she had a whole bag of spoiled carrots to throw away. Instead of just chucking them in the compost, I took the ones that looked like they had a good chance of sprouting a top, chopped them in half, and planted the top part while composting the bottom. All heads grew and now one is making a bunch of white flowers. I guess planting spoiled carrots counts as a second year of growth! But thanks for showing how to harvest the seeds, I'm so excited to plant home-saved seeds for once!

I planted mine from carrot tops...ate the leaves, waited for the main stem to grow out...got the flowers... didn't know what to do with them...or how to harvest them...or for how long to leave them to get seeds. So here I am. Thank you Sir.

I am grateful to the Lord for finding this channel. Your instructions are clear and concise. I thought my carrots 🥕 didn’t grow. I’m a new gardener. I didn’t realize it took so long to grow😀

I'm an old gardener but we moved to Arkansas and bought a farm with very poor top soil and ROCKS. We've had to change everything. Now we're in raised beds and gardening to survive the future. I'm going to save as many seeds as I can. Please teach us how to save other seeds. Your voice is so calming & I enjoyed your video very much. I think my blood pressure went down as I was listening to you speak.
