Never Buy Seeds Again - How to Collect Carrot Seeds

Knowing how to collect carrot seeds is a little more involved than typical seed saving. Carrots are biennial plants and don't flower until their second year. By planning ahead and leaving a few carrots in the ground over winter, you can reward yourself with thousands of carrot seeds.

Instead of buying seed to start with, I recommend just planting a carrot top and letting it re-root. Since it's already mature, it will produce flowers that same year (instead of having to wait two years to generate flowers if you start from seed). It's better than buying seed, because if you buy a carrot, you get to eat the carrot AND you get flowers that same year!

I planted 3 carrot tops in water a few weeks ago. They sprouted and I put them in a planter with some mint. They are producing lots of flowers and the mint is also thriving! I got a bunch of carrots from my employer when she had a whole bag of spoiled carrots to throw away. Instead of just chucking them in the compost, I took the ones that looked like they had a good chance of sprouting a top, chopped them in half, and planted the top part while composting the bottom. All heads grew and now one is making a bunch of white flowers. I guess planting spoiled carrots counts as a second year of growth! But thanks for showing how to harvest the seeds, I'm so excited to plant home-saved seeds for once!
