Porsche 992 911 Carrera - is it slow?

Duck & Whale Editor Lee Dean answers the question: Is the base model 911 slow? Will I need more?

Duck & Whale issue 17: “I remember the day he took me for a spin, I was in awe of the sound and I loved the feeling of the rear-wheel drive, it was impossible not to be aware of the engine behind the seats.”
His eyes flick down and then continues, “There are so many cars here... This is the slowest of the bunch... Eh?”

"Eyebrows raised, I return, “In the 911 family this is the first step on the ladder, compared to these other models in the showroom it has slightly smaller brakes and slightly less power but there is nothing slow about the Carrera anymore!”

To join the legendary 911 world is a treat in itself. You are driving a car the concept of which hit the road in 1963/1964. The architecture hasn’t changed since nor does any other car compare to it. So indeed, with a twin turbo 3.0 flat-6 delivering 385 hp and a chunky torque in the 992 Carrera, one could say there is no such thing as a base Carrera. A 911 - which ever the generation - is a priviledge on wheels !

I have a 2020 that I have put 32000 miles. 20 21 inch wheels, sport chrono, sport exhaust, g. blue, what fun! Tim

One reason I kept my poor man's Porsche for so many years, B8.5 Audi S4, is the 0-60 acceleration is fun and it's okay to drive a little crazy on back roads but you feel the weight. If I was driving canyons I'd much prefer doing it in the slower 911 base. People place too much emphasis on 0-60. My dual pulley car does mid 3 seconds but other than VW fanboys drooling no one really cares about my 4 door rocket.

So true, I agonized over the Carrera Vs Carrera S, test drove both and honestly couldn’t see (other than the red brake calipers) or feel any difference. OK I’m no Stig or Mark Webber but I can’t see why you would pay $35k more for the S but that’s my opinion from someone who owns a Carrera (and $35k change). It’s a gorgeous car that is far more capable than me and you wont be disappointed

The Carrera is a great car. I have a 2022 in Midnight Blue over Mojave with 28k miles. I love it. Though, I have to admit that I am about ready to swap in some S/GTS turbos and an APR tune.

Just locked in my build for a base 992, January delivery. Coming out of a 2021 F90 M5. Went with Chalk exterior, black interior, sports design package(in body color)for front and back, body colored side skirts, sports chrono with red dial(and red tach dial), Spyder 20/21" wheels, alacantra steering wheel.

Love my "Base" Carrera 992, what an awesome car. I got to drive the GT3 and Turbo S at the Porsche Experience Center in Atlanta a few months back and honestly the Turbo S is WAY too much car for the street and the GT3 just isn't as compliant off the track. The Carrera is plenty of car and I'm thinking of just getting a tune and enjoying the hell out of it.

0-60 times(insert your car below.)
0-60 under 3sec: Hyper/Mega car
0-60 3-4sec: fast
0-60 4-5sec: Quick
0-60 5sec:slow
Anything after ain’t worth mentioning

"Base" is the wrong name - call it "classic", and it will be 50 miles faster....

Buy a Carrera S, change out the exhaust & cats, get a tune on it, and you have (almost) Turbo performance without the price tag.

Don’t pay more for same engine I came from 718 CS the base 992 feel much quicker with more top end power. I’d save $20k.

Im still triggered that people say 0-60mph is 0-100kmh. Ffs not its not, its 0-62mph that is 0-100kmh.

Way too many gimmicks on this video- it's really off putting and makes it amateurish. Let the car and the facts do the talking as the content is good. . . .
