I mean it’s more a nerf to casters than a buff to martials, especially with that 20 AC lich

That's interesting. Most combats I make are meant to be done in 3 turns at most. Just make those couple of turns as intense as possible!

Wotc: we heard the players, we buffed the martial classes
Fans: yeah!!
WotC: of course, we then ultrabuffed the caster classes, for balance
Fans: wait, what?
WotC: oh, but we removed the inmmuinty of monsters against nonmagical damage to benefit martial classes
Fans: oh, ok, thats goo-
WotC: of course that for the balance, we megabuffed monsters with spells and area damage and have even higher init, AC and HP, more ressistances and features specially good against martial classes
Fans: just... stop...
WotC: oh, most of them dont even need spellslots, just cast everything at will, specially the spells that nerf martials

I find it slightly weird what they did remove a bunch of key abilities with the vampire and removing werewolf's immunities to non-magical and non-silver slashing, piercing, and bludgeoning damage. Also the werewolf no longer has a whole bunch of rules and stuff that happens when you get lycanthropy, you kinda just become a wolf with 10 hp and lose all control. Plus it doesn't stipulate how do you remove that curse. So when you get cursed you are just stuck not playing the game anymore? Unless the level 3 party finds a way to cure the curse or resurrect me when I die as a wolf which permanently kill you.

I love what they did with most monsters tbh but there's some changes I find a bit odd.

I would disagree based on two thematic changes: loss of resistances and immunities. Shadows previously had resistances to non magical weapons based on being non corporeal. Werewolves previously were immune to weapons without silver based on being lycanthropes. Since regular weapons hurt them now, it seems more like nerfs than buffs.

In retrospect, it kinda makes sense why they didn't nerf spells or casters that much. The nerf was in the monster design. My favourite class as a player is Wizard, and I'm looking forward to the challenge!

The monster manual doesn't have the deadliest encounter though, that one is in the players handbook. A rival adventuring group of equal number that are well synced and used to working together for maximum effect.

Something I have noticed is the indirect nerf to assassins. Since many high CR monsters have crazy high initiative bonus, it is less often the assassin gets to do their big hits.

The difference between martials and casters is that if the martial misses their attack, they can just swing again next turn, if a caster misses or the spell doesn’t affect anyone it’s a waste of a spell slot and a massive blow to the caster. I think it might’ve been too much of a “fix” but that’s just me.

Didn't the new version have a problem with inflicting conditions on martials? Like wolfs knocking prone creatures with an attack. It used to have a Str save, now it doesn't, it happens on hit, which is a direct nerf to barbarians who like to tank an being hit. In fact, all melee characters seem more exposed to this while wizards will be chilling in the backline.

I like the pathfinder stuff where disabling stuff gets a higher success automticly for boss monsters (also players) So you do have to really suck at a roll to be just stunned or something.
