They like to use the idea of socialism being an insult since the controlling party in WWII Germany were "socialists." People love to thrust the label of socialism (or anything they feel is insulting to another that connotates not being "American enough") onto anyone who disagrees with them under that kind of pretext which is fairly ironic.

Oh, I was born in the very early 80's and absolutely remember the red scare, it doesn't scare me in the slightest but my parents are definitely afraid of the "S" word.

I'm one of those old farts who remembers back when the Soviet Union was a going concern. Also, my people are from what was once the Communist bloc. Was there a lot of anti-Communist propaganda? Yes. Was some of it absurd? Sure. Was some of it true? Yes; propaganda is not synonymous with falsehood. Communism, as a practically implemented economic system, meant a life of lines for rations and black-market dealing for the average person. You could also lose your job for cracking a joke about the Party.
Is Communism synonymous with socialism? No. Are Copeland et. al. trying to exploit the word "socialism" to push their own anti-freedom ideology? Yes.
