How Big Tech’s carbon offsets are threatening Kenyans

US tech giants are spending millions to buy carbon offsets in the Global South. One project in Kenya covers an area the size of Slovenia and promises to offset carbon emissions by restricting where and when livestock can graze. But indigenous herders are crying foul, while human rights organizations worry that fencing and armed enforcement of grazing rules are eroding nomadic traditions without prior consent from residents.

As a kenyan, it's embarrassing that a german media house is the one to expose this carbon credit/offset rue...

This is why every Kenyan interested in conservation at all should read the book "The Big Conservation Lie" by Ogada & Mbaria.

To summarize, a carbon offset is a license to pollute. The licensor is trying to make a quick buck while the licensee pays as little as possible to feel good polluting. Great investigative journalism.

Let the western polluters do the offsetting in their countries. USA has lots of land similar to northern rangelands land where they can offset. Traditional land use systems should be left intact for local and indigenous communities

Selling your carbon credits even kills your future hopes of industrialization, dont let polluters buy them

Great production quality and story telling! Thanks for making this!

There shouldn't be such a thing as carbon offsets. There shouldn't be consumer carbon taxes. There needs to be direct penalization at the source of pollution.
Only then will we see meaningful change.

The Kenyans in this documentary who don't have their faces blurred or protected need URGENT protection. As good as the documentary is how on earth have they exposed these Kenyans to so much risk especially in this environment under Ruto?

I’ve never been for carbon credit trading. I believe carbon capture and mitigation should happen at its source. Polluters should be responsible for changing their methods and no one else.

But, at the very least: Carbon credit trading should only be allowed within the same industry type, across the planet. In other to words, if a company uses fossil fuels for an specific industrial use in one nation — they can not buy carbon credits from other economic sectors. They must buy credit from the same industrial sector. A data center, or a drilling or mining operation, a petrochemical plant and not buy credits from agriculturalists. Subsistence farming and grazing environmental mitigation can not be used to offset rich, powerful industries — this is a mismatch.

If an even more powerful and wealthy entity emerges on the planet that decides that Meta, Exxon-Mobil or Black Rock is engaging in activities that need to be mitigated for the sake of the planet — buying, leasing or influencing land use to the financial detriment of these companies — you can be sure US lawmakers would be writing laws banning carbon credit trading,

It's the same old story of throwing their garbage over the neighbours side of the fence; while claiming first prize for a beautiful garden!

Have you come across any similar stories regarding carbon offsets?

Just sad to see how big companies exploit pourer countries 😢😢
Great video

I really enjoyed the video it was very informative on big tech companies. Those companies should be focusing on reducing their own carpet Emissions on their headquarters instead of disrupting local herders livelihoods and using violence against them. Also, I do acknowledge that they are helping the lands in Kenya heal and grow a new vegetation, but I think the harder shift more say of how this land management is implemented to not disrupt our livelihoods.

These big Western companies produce large amounts carbon emissions, but are trying to escape the RESPONSIBILITY for this through the conservancies and the carbon credits. The consequence is Kenyans, through FORCE end up being restricted on how to use THEIR OWN LAND. Not to mention the disrupted weather systems as a side effect; extended periods of drought and floods etc.

It''s embarassing that the local communities don't even understand how and why it's happening to them, and the rest of the country has no clue that this is going on. Wakenya hapa tunachezwa
