They are usually reasonably ok, unless you get too close during nesting season.
They protect the area in a funnel shape from the ocean floor to the surface.
The warning is when they turn on their side...
Ignore that and they will hassle you until your out of the protected zone .

I used to keep triggerfish in my aquarium. They are straight up hoodlums and the coolest fish ever.

They can bite chunks off your swimming fins. Like someone has said, they're generally okay, but if they tilt to one side, give them a wide berth, they're 2 to 2 1/2 feet long and could easily remove a finger !

Male trigger fish are hyper territorial, as a global diver, I have had similar experiences in Maui with Huma-huma's. They were about 15 inches long and I'll tell ya what, if triggers got as big as some larger sharks, 5ft+, man would have a hard time reef diving.
