There are some videos online of people planting there own seeds by creating like a block of dirt around seed, also Aerogarden makes a plant your own seed kit with a spongy matter to put the seeds. I don't know how successful they are, but I have been looking into it as well. Thank you for the video.

Remarkably thorough unboxing. I'm jealous that you got cover caps, tomato set, and pruning shears -- I got none of those in my set for about USD$100. But no big deal (and I'm not going to try tomatoes in this tiny thing). Some things:
* the pulpy insert in the basket is not 'dirt'. It is peat. (I know you probably have figured that out already.) But you can totally save the baskets and replenish them with after-market peat inserts that are size compatible, or DIY it by carving suitably shaped chunks of the ever-popular 'rock wool', and even go less green for the environment and use carved chunks of a 'pool noodle'. It works; it just has to hold the seen in place and have sufficient provision for roots to grow out (which the seam of a pool noodle wrap will adequately provide).
* "the hole in the 'fill to here' thing" -- this is a little more interesting. That is an air hole. If you look towards the right side at the base, you'll see there is a port into which water can flow. So that tube is meant to fill with the water in the tank, and the hole at the top is to let air out so it can fill that way. (If it was closed, water would not go in except a little due to pressure differentials). /Inside/ that tube is the magic. There is a sealed float, with a magnet at its base. So this is the water level sensor. The magnet interfaces with a Hall effect sensor in the base unit. So it's a clever way of getting telemetry from the water tank to the base unit without requiring wires. If you want to view it for yourself, you can gently twist the tube counter-clockwise one click (you can see on the left side how the engagement mechanism works). Once disengaged the tube lifts out to reveal the trick! If you have a magnet on-hand you can see it attracts and repels the embedded piece of metal, from which we can infer that it is a permanent magnet inside.
* I suspect that I will use this unit more for starting herbs that I will plant outside. So I think it is important to monitor roots and get them outside as soon as possible. For the indoors cultivation, I'll probably do things like parsley and cilantro. Those grow great here outdoors, but they are a butterfly attractant, and I don't like a bunch of caterpillars in my parsley.
* trim your roots periodically. Horror, I know, but just do it lest you have a hopeless mess to detangle at the inevitable cleaning time.
Cheers! And thanks for the vid!
