The Akra Melagavi lighthouse or Heraion Lighthouse (named after the ancient temple of Hera near it) is located at the northern entrance of the bay of Corinth and separates it from the Gulf of Alkyonides to the north. It leads the ships that sail to the Corinthian Sea and move towards the port and the Corinth canal. It first operated in 1897 with oil as its energy source and characterized by a white flash every 10 seconds and a radiance of 20 nautical miles. During World War II the lighthouse remained off. In 1947, as part of the reconstruction of the lighthouse network, it re-operated as an energy source under the supervision of oil. In 1982 the lighthouse was electrified, the oil machinery was replaced and operated as a supervised electric with a characteristic white flash every 10 seconds and a light of 19 nautical miles. Access to the lighthouse is by road from Loutraki to Lake Vouliagmeni.
