It's not just the slap, it's the lack of remorse and realization that he never thought and would understand that he was wrong. In the end, it's about about her dignity as a woman and human. She was slapped in front of everyone. It's easy to swallow pain and even humiliation BUT it's hard to swallow your dignity. I don't know why but this movie reminded me of "The Overcoat" by Nikolai Gogol. It's a great story.
