ChatGPT: The Screenwriting Partner You Never Knew You Needed

As a screenwriter, I've always found the process of coming up with new ideas and fleshing out characters to be both exhilarating and challenging. However, I recently discovered a new tool that has made the process even more enjoyable: ChatGPT.

ChatGPT is a large language model developed by OpenAI that can generate human-like text. I stumbled upon it while searching for writing prompts and decided to give it a try as a writing partner. I was blown away by the results.

One of the first things I did was to ask ChatGPT to come up with an original logline for a romantic comedy. In a matter of seconds, it gave me a logline that was not only creative but also perfectly in line with the style of the romantic comedy I had in mind. From there, I asked ChatGPT to come up with a list of 20 female first names taken from previous romantic comedies, and it produced a comprehensive list that I could use as inspiration for my characters.

I also decided to use ChatGPT to help me with Dan Harmon's story circle, a storytelling technique that I had been wanting to try. ChatGPT helped me come up with 8 beats of drama that took my story from beginning to end, providing me with a clear structure for my screenplay.

But ChatGPT's capabilities don't stop there. I also used it to write an extremely detailed treatment for my romantic comedy and a shotlist ready for filming. It was amazing to see how ChatGPT was able to take my ideas and turn them into a fully fleshed out story.

In conclusion, ChatGPT has proven to be an invaluable tool for me as a screenwriter. It's not only helped me with the creative process but also saves me time by doing the heavy lifting of organizing and outlining my ideas. I highly recommend ChatGPT to any screenwriter looking for a writing partner that can help them take their ideas to the next level.

01:09 📜 The first prompt involved asking the AI to generate a logline for a romantic comedy with two female characters, providing basic genre and character information.
02:01 📝 Different prompts can be used to refine details, such as changing character relationships (e.g., stepmothers instead of grandmothers) for a more tailored collaboration.
03:25 🎭 Utilizing the Dan Harmon story Circle prompt, the AI creates eight dramatic beats that form the story's structure, effectively providing a framework for the screenplay.
04:06 📃 The AI can generate an extremely detailed treatment for the movie, including a title ("Sugar and Spice"), providing a comprehensive overview of the story for pitching and planning.
04:48 🎬 While the AI can't create visual content, it can suggest scenes and shots for a shot list based on the treatment, aiding writer-directors in visualizing their scenes for filming.

Very interesting take on it, Knifes.
I was writing a script with the assistance of ChatGPT before I came across your video. I started a new one after watching. Not because the first try was terrible, but it wasn't well structured.
You can actually ask ChatGPT to write a scene for you and it absolutely delivers it in the right format. If it forgets you just can request to write it again in filmscript format and it does.

Another interesting thing I discovered was the following:
I let ChatGPT write a scene. Once it's written (a minute or so later) I tell the program "You are a experienced critic. Please give the scene you just wrote a harsh critic".
Usually it comes with some points of improvement. For example it suggests adding more subtext, complexity and movement to a scene to make it less static.
You then can ask if it can rewrite the scene with all that in mind and it does.

This brings me to a little bit of a frustrating point.
While this is all very good, the rewrite of the scene will in most cases be very different. It leaves out all the things you liked about the first version and adds other things that are good as well.
You then can request to change some parts back as they were, but then comes the moment were you recognize that you are talking to a machine. Because at some point it forgets things, misunderstands things and you can end up with a mess.

I think the best way to write the scenes is to just let ChatGPT critic them. Then you can adjust them just as you feel is right.

ChatGPT is a great collaborator. Not just because it never gets tired, lol.
If you know what kind of scene you need, but you have no inspiration, you just have to ask.
Let's say that you need a scene were one of your characters needs to have a dark secret that has to be revealed and you don't have the slightest clue what that secret should be, you just have to ask for suggestions.

Have fun with it!

I'm glad you shared this content, because before watching your video I've been playing around with chatgpt, seeing that I'm writing 3 screenplays simutaneously, one best on my novel series 528 page novel (1of5), so shrink wrapping or adapting novel into screeplay is not an easy task, however, the prompts are the key; Currently writing a Romantic comedy, Suspense thriller and Fantasy. Hope to see you soon. Keep it coming!

Im using chat gpt as a writing partner for a novel. in one chapter i wrote a mystery box, not really knowing what it should be used for (other than to tackle the main problem of the story). after giving chatgpt a detailed description of my novel, it gave me several good ideas for what to use the mystery box for! some i had thought myself, but the one i am using is from chatgpt

This is incredible! I’ve been trying to use ChatGPT to help me with a story idea I’ve been struggling with for the past 2 years, but I couldn’t come up with good enough prompts. Thank you for sharing all of these tricks. I would love to watch your movie someday. God bless!

This is awesome, haven't tried any AI software yet and have had writers block for decades, thank you. I think AI will as you said be a collaborator, rather than replace artists.

If you already have a movie idea, just write a short summary in the prompt and ask chatgpt to create an outline based on the summary for you.

Thank you for this tutorial.
I wanted a short form script as a long form ad for a customer.
This really helped!

Thank you for making this. I collaborated with it last night after seeing your video on it. I thought is was cool how I could tell it to add to or change something in Scene 5 for example. Then it did it. Was great fun!

Pretty soon, we'll be able to input "which screenplays were written with help from ChatGPT?" and it will commence to give itself credit.

I never thought of doing this thank u. I have a script I wrote back in 2008 but got a lot of feedback because people felt it was too writer Director and not enough writer. So I’ll definitely be using this to try to convert it to the proper script set up.
