I think we are going to find that a lot of cardiovascular dysfunction actually starts in the brain and there will be a hybrid line of study or at least collaborative activities. Just read a study linking amygdala activity ratios to being able to predict takotsubo cardiomyopathy years in advance, and I think this is the tip of the iceberg. The cingulate cortex may or may not be the source of the problem, but I also think the midbrain should be of interest, particularly the periaqueductal gray/vagus nerve. There are extreme cases such as malignant vasovagal syndrome, but what about the patient who experiences a similar dysfunction but in a more chronic, low key way? How does that create wear and tear on the cv system? Most of the work I've seen on this - and it is a pretty new field - is coming out of Harvard and is definitely worth taking a look.
