What's Android Auto & Apple CarPlay? | Why You Don't Need Navigation

Opting to use your phone's navigation can save you $1000+ on your new vehicle.

If you're considering a new vehicle - you probably don't need to pay extra for the navigation. Most new vehicles are compatible with Apple Carplay & Android auto, which allow you to remotely connect your phone, which 'projects' basic apps on your vehicle's infotainment screen. This gives you the ability to make calls, listen to podcasts, open music, check the weather, and of course - use your phone's navigation via google maps.

The common rebuttal is that using your phone's navigation uses data, however if you watch to the end of the video, you'll see how you can download maps so you never have to waste data again.

The benefits of using your phone's maps & gps is that it provides real time traffic alerts, it allows you to quickly plug in a destination from the vehicle's screen, and you can press your vehicle's steering wheel to activate google assistant or SIRI.

Depending on the vehicle, iPhone's can connect with Youtube, however, Android phones need to be plugged into the vehicle's usb port's to work properly.

I love the offline maps feature in Google and use it for international travel when data use can become expensive. I would still use live maps for everyday driving though because I do like having live traffic updates, which don't come with offline maps.

Don't most people have unlimited data these days?

Helpful. I've been mulling a Chevy Bolt and saw no mention of navigation, a common feature for 10+ years that I'd like to gain. They do have phone interactivity, and I guess the marketers haven't caught up to what that means. Get it now.

my daughter has a 3 year old hyundai i30 with built in nav and I have the next model with apple car play. I miss the fact that apple car play maps do not give speed and red light camera warniings like the old nav system does. Not that I intentionally speed but the warnings alert you to changing speed zones when driving in unfamiliar territory.

I purchased a new 2021 subaru forester. Constant issues like freezing and disconnecting with android auto is making me purchase a standalone gps unit like tomtom. I have rules out the cable. Tomtom is cheaper than a new phone.

I’m a little confused. Why down load maps instead of using GPS from your phone?

My Android stop playing thru my cat speakers. It like it disconnects and starts playing thru the phone. Does anyone else have that problem? And also what's the solution, does it require a special cord?

But why would you ditch a great infotainment system for crap Android Auto and Apple Carplay? I can't get my head around this at all. Every car i have used the in built system is way, way better. Nope, AA % ACP is a waste of time. Don't do it.
