Here's how I've been doing it for years: For VFTs, in mid – October I drain off excess water from the pots, hit them with a SULFUR based fungicide and place in zip lock bags and pop them in the fridge for 3 - 3 1/2 months. I occasionally check them (once a month) for fungus and hit with the fungicide if needed. Late winter around February/March I take them out and clean them up, hit them with SULFUR based fungicide again and place in a south and west window and some under florescent and white 'daylight' LED lights until night time temps. regularly stay above freezing then slowly acclimate them to full outdoor Sun. I've been using this method for 12 years with no losses.

First time VFT mama here, and this is by far the most helpful video on inside dormancy I've seen. Thank you so much for this info. I feel more confidant in bringing my new baby (named Jigsaw) through her winter's nap.

I would like to see what the plant looks like after a month being in the fridge, so I know I'm doing it right 😊 Thanks from Canada

Great advice! Here in NJ I just put em in the garage. They get a few hours of indirect light through a narrow window but really it's mostly dark from Nov to April. I top-water the traps throughout the winter and spring and they bounce right back!

Hey dude I did this last winter and it worked well for me. Difference is that I shut the lid tight with no holes because I didn't want them to get dry in the fridge. Didn't have any issues.

I’m from Chicago area too. Dormancy is tricky. I just wait til around middle of November, put my potted flytraps in a styrofoam container in my garage. Don’t water them. Check them every Saturday to make sure the soil is still moist and there’s no fungus growing. Middle of April, I’ll take them out, repot and put them outside.

Thanks so much for this, I found your presentation very direct and helpful. It makes a huge difference hearing from someone who has had years of experience rather than someone who is just passing on information they’ve only heard about themselves. I lost many of my VT this year because it wasn’t cold enough here in sub tropical australia. Just because I think it’s cold in “winter” doesn’t mean they do. Also I enjoyed seeing how confidently you handle your plants, I’ve been way too fragile and anxious with them.

Thanks for the tip! My plant is indoors and temps are dropping here, but not low enough just yet. I wanted to be sure to store properly in the fridge.

8:09 I would still put a light over them as it helps with avoiding mold. with a smart socket plug u can set it to turn on and of with the sun going up and down

I live in Hawaii which has no winter. I am happy to know that I can put mine in the refrigerater, thanks to your show. My question is what is the least amount of time it needs to stay dormant? Would one month be too short? Thanks again.

Firstly, thanks for this great video! Secondly, not sure if you'll see this, but I did the second method (put entire plant as is in a bag), but someone had told me to seal the bag. Do you know why? is it to maintain moisture?

Now you mention a garage. I live in Ohio and during winter it can get to be in the single digits for days on end. My plant is also in a smaller store bought brown container like the one in your video. So would a garage be insulated enough to keep my plant in throughout the harsher days of winter?

Is hydrogen peroxide good as an anti-mold agent? Also, how cold should the fridge be?
