I owned some for a few years. They are masters of escape and kept getting out of their hamster cage until I just bought a large fish tank to put them in. Cute little things.

Someone asked me what's the difference between a gerbil and a hamster.
I told him that 🐹 Hamsters have tiny triangular tails and that gerbils have longer tails like mice.
I even learned more about gerbils and hamsters since then.

Gerbils are amazing animals. I've had 6 in my life and each was so special, but the last one was the one that I'll always remember the kindest. Her name was Sunshine. Like her name suggested, she really was a ray of light in my life. She was an accident, lol, after *someone* decided to put my female gerbil who's companion died too young (poor genetics, i believe he had some sort of stroke... also yes a he, the petstore misgendered her i thought i was buying two boys smh) with one of my 2 older male gerbils. Led to two babies being born who I eventually named Midnight and Sunshine. They lived with their mama and were such joys, so unique, fun, sweet, and beautiful. Unfortunately their mom began to get sick and while she was dying, Midnight ended up dying in a tragic accident, leaving Sunshine alone. Gerbils are very social creatures but females can be territorial and introduction proccess for them are much harder than it is for other rodents like mice and rats, so she spent the remainder of her life alone but with a lot of love. She and i bonded so much, she would talk to me sometimes, play with my hair, snuggle up on my chest and make happy chirps as i pet her, it was so cute. She was my baby. Her time inevitability came and it was devestating but she lived a happy life despite her losses and im grateful i gave that to her. I might not've been the perfect gerbil mama but I did my best. I stopped having pets after because I wanted to be in a better place when i got more. Its been over a year and a half now and I hope that time is soon. Love you Sunshine ❤

My experience has been rather different. I found gerbils to be very bitey and always drew blood, whereas hamsters were the gentle ones.
