That's the dumbest rule I've ever heard. 🤦‍♀️

One of my kid's school refused my child to eat lunch. They say my child owes money. I asked how when we get free lunch. In our area all kids gets free lunch no matter what. I was livid.

I know someone whose school does this. She chewed them out for it, pointing out that she’s literally a dietician whose entire job is helping people learn how to develop and maintain healthy diets. She knows healthy diets better than any lunch monitor, and she’s fine with her kids having a little treat in their lunch.

She’s also had to chew out the catering staff at a hospital she used to work at for changing one of her patients’ diets without so much as asking anyone. The poor guy was allowed one (1) pudding cup every day as his dessert, and the rest was all kinda bland hospital food. And they kept denying the poor guy his pudding because they thought a diabetic shouldn’t have that (even though both his dietician and his endocrinologist were completely fine with it).

I just don’t get people who think it’s okay to mess with someone’s food like that

I volunteered at a library over the summer a couple years ago serving pre-packaged lunches to kids who need it. The rule was you weren't supposed to take any of the food outside of the library, it was supposed to be eaten there, but there was like a fruit cup that a kid had taken that was sealed up and didn't eat it and took it outside, and some lady took it from him at the door and brought it back to the room. She said "look! This kid was trying to take this out of the library!" I literally scolded this lady and said "Did you really take food from that kid?? These are kids in need, and you really took food away from him?"

For fk sake, I understand following the rules, but to not turn a blind eye in such an innocent situation shows that some people really have no regard for others. I don't give a fk about the rules when we are feeding hungry kids.

Rules like this have actually become a really big issue for us. My oldest has significant sensory differences so we called a dietician and made a meal plan that made sure she was getting sufficient calories and nutrients while we slowly helped her to grow her safe foods. These would often include some kind of small treat food in very carefully portioned sizes. After a week of her coming home with he treat uneaten she started to refuse fruit and even carrots because "sugar is unhealthy". I had to have a very firm conversation with the lunchroom staff about the reality of differing nutrition needs and the issues with demonizing food ingredients

I flatly refused to comply when I was a teacher. There was absolutely no way I was prepared to inspect, police, and steal things from a child’s lunchbox. No sir, no ma’am, not doing that shit. I’d rather a child be fed than starving hungry.

im diabetic and when i was still in school, i had a lot of snacks in my bag like fruit snacks, juice, and some times chips in case i had a low blood sugar moment. if i had gotten those snacks taken away bc they were unhealthy, that couldve been lethal for me. there were times i didnt have anything to help my lows, and i would rely on a friends kindness to give me something sugary. if this wouldve been a rule for my school, i wouldve been in serious medical danger.

"no junk food, ill be taking that"
"Ok, now what do i eat?"
"Well... You know..."
(Less than a hour later)
"Is it true you attempted to starve my client's son?"

Not only does that promote eating disorders, I have allergies and a lot of my simple foods I can take places aren't the healthiest- or don't look it. I would fist fight someone if they took my food just cause.

I had the same problem with my little, but it was about drinks. He hated water and was such a picky eater. I was sending a flavored canned water and got a similar "screaming" note. I took him to school the next morning and reminded them that they need to read labels and that he is an extremely difficult eater... Never had that problem again!

That is so classist. Not everyone can afford to send their kids with healthy food. Sometimes keeping them fed with anything is the most they can do.

My whole state got a no junk food rule by the time I was in high school. It mostly applied to food that the school sold at lunch as opposed to what you brought from home. But before this rule came in my high school had Coke vending machines… the riot on the day the vending machines got taken away was huge!!!!

When i was in year 3 (age 7-8) they set a new rule that we had to answer a maths question before we were allowed to leave the classroom to go for our small break (juicebox and snack, not the main lunch break) and if you got the question wrong you got sent to the back of the line to try again. For 4 weeks straight i got sent back 3-4 times every day, and usually it depended on when the teacher gave up on me/when i started crying cuz i couldnt get it right, because i wasnt getting the questions, ever.

Then, like a month after we started doing that, a new school rule meant we were only allowed to bring fruit or something healthy out for the small break, so no crisps or cookies or cupcakes anymore. I stopped crying when i failed the questions, because i didnt care if i couldnt go out anymore when my only snack option was a banana/apple 😅

At the time it was really upsetting to be what felt like tortured daily, but now as an adult, im just annoyed nobody thought to get me tested for dyscalculia 😂

This actually happened once in my school, 3rd grade, still remember it. Our teacher was going on some kind of health power trip and decided that before we left for recess, she had to inspect our lunch boxes first.
I got in trouble for having white bread instead of whole grain (i was a picky eater) and another kid lost his whole cupcake when the teacher threw it in the trash.

That was the first and last time she did that though, all the parents found out (naturally) and complained about it.😂

Omg that poor teacher. No one deserved to be yelled out. My daighter last uear was sent to the office for early dismissal and being a kindergartener, she went the wrong way-ended up outside by herself near thr bus drop off and walked around thr outside up to the front office ALONE. A teacher found her and brought her inside where my husband was standing, wide eyed and wondering what happened.
I didnt call to complain i know accidents happen but what irked me is the email i got from the teacher first apologizing and THEN listing all thr horrible things my fresh kindergartener did that week(play in the bathroom too long, took off her shoes, etc ). Ugh.

"Junk food" tends to be a lot less expensive, and some kids are NOT adventurous eaters. It's not a choice if you don't have an alternative. LET THE KIDS EAT!

Parents have a perfect right to pack a treat in their kids lunches. It's none of the school's business what their kids eat for lunch. The school should be held accountable for theft when they take away a child's food.

my middle school had a bunch of stupid rules like that. One of the worst is that at the lunch table you have to sit very "proper" both feet touching the floor. I have EDS so it's impossible for me to sit like that without experiencing pain, I would get removed from my friend group and have to sit alone for sitting "wrong". They also banned backpacks and phones (even in hallways)
