As an Asian myself, I can confirm this. Those people get offended because they don't understand our rich culture of collective childhood abuse

He just emotionally damaged all the bullies by his words.

I love that his comedy is a one dimensional Asian parent stereotype, but his explanation is nuanced and eloquent.

As an Asian myself I can confirm that people being offended on our behalf have not been beaten by a bamboo staff.

As a black woman, I get so tired of people being offended FOR me about things I'm not offended BY at all. It's ridiculous.

I heard a quote once that said "The problem with stereotypes is not that they are untrue, but that they are incomplete." I love this quote because it outlines the truth that stereotypes are often based in reality. When people utilize stereotypes about a group they are a part of as a form of comedy or communication, it can be incredibly healing. When stereotypes are used as a means to insult, belittle, or caricaturize a group of people, that is when they become problematic.

"Everyone who is offended, none of them are asian."
This happens way too often.

I like that he empathized with the people who are offended while standing his ground and explaining his stance

That’s a great point. Coming out and saying “there is an Asian accent, and that’s good” is a take more people need to hear. Accents are real, accents can be funny, but as Steven has shown, it’s less about the accent and more about the character. The character doesn’t have a funny accent, the character is funny with an accent. Just like real people.

I look at it this way people like Steven make fun of the stereotype based on having that experience to help people understand it, he is a good man that teaches through comedic effect

I have a co-worker who is Asian, plain as day, he actually intentionally throws on the stereotypical voice to make me laugh, we do the Asian dad jokes back and forth to get the hours to pass a bit faster.

"I don't want to give power to those bullies."
That was beautiful!
