Don't Go Hitch Hiking Without These!!

I have hitch hiked about 25, 000 miles in at least 30 countries,
TOP of my list of stuff to take is, a REALLY GOOD sleeping bag, preferably one that is good enough to keep you warm even if you were 1/2 way up Mount Everest, and the bag is wet,
NEXT a really good pair of hiking boots, and a quality rucksack too, I wouldnt bother so much with the "tech stuff" as that makes you a target for street muggers, lets face it, if you are in a rough place, and looking on your iphone screen to work out where you are,
you FULLY DESERVE to be mugged for that, so just take "old school maps" instead hey,
a Swiss Army Knife, is a MUST too, next, a marker pen and an A4 pad, so you can make a
decent readable sign, clearly displaying your destination on it, dont forget that you are,
travelling in a DIRECT STRAIGHT LINE to that destination, along a MAIN ROUTE,
only willing to be dropped off at 24 hour gas service stations en route, with NO deviation whatsoever from that PLAN, and NEVER do recreational drugs on your journey, as those,
"totally RUIN your careful plan, and cloud your judgement of strangers" so you can wait until you are safely back home, to get wasted, as THAT just might SAVE YOUR LIFE, another tip,
"learn some SELF DEFENCE before you set off"

Also before you set off, you MUST HAVE a plan to deal with potential "crazy scenarios",
I personally NEVER put my rucksack into the boot of a car, IF the driver is sat behind the wheel, BECAUSE as soon as I close the boot lid, "they could simply drive off with ALL of my gear, while Im left standing behind the car, LIKE A FUCKING IDIOT as they do that, GOOD TIP hey.

I recently returned from a almost 2 year hitchiking trip in asia and my top 5 are:


- umbrella (for rain a sun) and rain cover for the bag (not just for rain but to keep it clean whenever and wherever you drop, so you jjst have to clean the cover)
- filled water bottles (i like to bring 1.5 liters)
- food for self and to share with the drivers (i like to share fruits as it is cheap, healthy and ready to eat)
- GPS/maps (true that you need conection for smartphones to work but still i prefer them to paper maps as they will easily get spoiled on a long journey, specially in humid areas)
- Camping tent (get used to sleep on hard floor. its not as hard as it seems. and it will protect you from mosquitoes, parasites, give you a sense of protection, my sweet 20€ camping tent, home sweet home)


I never used carton boards to signal where i wanted to go so i don't really consider it necessary. As for sleeping matress, its way more important for thermal insulation than it is for comfort, but still i dont consider it necessary because in many places in asia like in temples, mosques, houses of locals, there will be matresses that you can use... if they dont invite you to their homes in the first place, which happened most of the times :)... and when you dont find a home or a matress, just use something to improvise, i had a folded carton about my height when extended. much lighter than a sleeping matress, its free, can last for a couple of months and does the job.
Also if you go asia don't forget that that the thumb up doesnt work there. people will be wondering what the fuck you doing. just slightly wave your hand up and down towards the floor.. Cant really describe it properly into words haha. And of course, never forget to keep a positive attitude and spread love around you :)

Zipplock bags for my maps (preferably an atlas) - good free maps are getting hard to find these days.
I would also use a library as a sanctuary as you can get help if your in trouble, maps, phones, internet, bathrooms, water and sometimes food.
