Very nice orchid. I can see why you are attracted to the big lip. I’ve recently bought a couple of new phals and on both occasions they were in a mixture of bark & moss, so I’ve left them be until the flowers dropped off (which was not very long on the first one). I went in to check the roots and it was so disappointing to see them broken in so many places. They didn’t have a chance of lasting and went mushy in no time. I’ve been left with that one having no live roots and the second one is still in flower so again I’m going to leave it be. I thought that these growers send out most of their duds to unsuspecting customers who’ll throw them out after the flowers have finished. Very poor practice as far as I’m concerned. Anyway, I enjoyed watching your un potting video Carolyn and look forward to seeing an update.

I am only just learning about the hazard of the new orchids in moss. I've lost a few from root rot. Now, like you, I re-pot almost right away. Those little 'things' that people report finding the middle, are called 'peat plugs'. Here in the USA a lot of the supermarket orchids have these.

I like your choice of this yellow orchid. Good luck with it.

Hi Caroline, well done! I did the same thing recently with my latest phal: I repotted as soon as I got home, because I didn't like the medium. Over here in Belgium most of our orchids are from growers in the Netherlands. There is no moss in those pots. They use a special kind of orchid-mix-medium. I use it as well and add some extra bark. What I should do is drill holes in my plastic pots. I haven't done that yet... P.S. I also have one biglip. Your new baby is a beauty🌼

What fun!! And how well I know "Murphys Law". Been there and done that very recent. This yellow big lip is one gorgeous orchid. Glad you got it. I saw a beautiful pink big lip not long after you featured your first one in a video. What's that now 2 or 3 years ago? Anyway was trying to be good and didn't get it and here I am still hoping to find another like it and haven't so good for you getting this one. And good for you going ahead and getting it out of that pot. I think I heard it give a sigh of relief. You saved its life I'm sure. Thanks for sharing and congrats on a gorgeous orchid. Hmmmm, I wonder if this beauty will get a traffic cone some day???? I am already seeing root growth in my not so pretty cone - not so pretty but very functional!!! Thanks for all your help on that project. Planning to do another.

I was given my first live orchid a few months ago. I knew nothing about them. I have lots of outdoor plants that flower and lots of different types of indoor plants but knew nothing about orchids.
The one I received was planted in bark thankfully. It did have a strange moss plug in the center but it did not do much damage. I am trying to learn as much as I can about this orchid. If it does grow another flower spike I may get another one. It is growing a new leaf and some roots since I repotted it. Some roots died though. Thanks for all the helpful information.

Thank you for sharing, are you sure that your not getting any more orchids?

Yes, sometimes I didn't really find or see the creepy little cup. The delay to the re-potting had to do with bad quality bark. I bought bark from a florist. It was moldy and smelled that way too. In the meantime, I try to get the lightest bag of bark in the store. The heavier ones seem to have been out in the rain or stored too long somewhere moist, like in the store with tons of plants, where moisture gathers each night on the windows. There are tiny holes in the bags. That is an advantage and a disadvantage. I am very frustrated with this. It sure takes the fun out of indoor orchding. Any suggestions? Bake it in the oven? My oven is broken. 😜😝😬🤪😐=yours truly, me p. S. I bought some bark from the garden shop and was so happy until I opened the bag. Same, same, same. What happens if I soak that for 3 days? 🤦🏻‍♀️Maybe cook it on the stove for 3 days? (sarcasm)
