It's even more impressive when you learn that he throws in more than a few fake signs in there to fake out experienced enemies. So Kakashi would do 8 or 9 signs to perform a Jutsu that requires 5 hand signs, or do 15 signs to do a 10 sign Jutsu.

Kakashi is an unconventional Shinobu with unconventional tactics. I always assumed the reason he did so many signs was because mixing in random signs at high velocity meant you had absolutely no idea what he was about to do. You're never able to guess his next play.

The more handsign you have to do to perform a jutsu means you have less mastery over it. That's why Hashirama always just has his hands clasped cause that's all he needs as sign to perform his jutsus, absolute monster.

back before "being limited to jutsu that match your chakra nature" was a thing and all you really needed to perform a jutsu was the right hand signs and chakra control, Kakashi was (and still is) basically the Avatar, because his Sharingan doesn't let him "copy" jutsu, it gives him precognition so he can see peoples hand signs before they do them, thus he's memorized how to use over 1, 000 jutsu.
