Pope Francis has publicly prayed for the repose of the soul of an Italian priest who was stabbed to death by a homeless man on Tuesday morning. 51-year-old Father Roberto Malgesini was well known in the northern Italian city of Como for his work helping immigrants and the homeless. His alleged killer, a Tunisian man with mental health problems, turned himself in to the police after the attack.

A 30-year-old Texas man has been charged with destroying an historic statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus housed within the city of El Paso’s cathedral. The attack took place on Tuesday morning at around 10 am while the church was open for private prayer. A lone suspect entered the sanctuary of St. Patrick's Cathedral and attacked the figure of Christ which has atop of the church’s high altar for the past 90-years. On social media, the Bishop of El Paso, the Most Reverend Mark Seitz, said that he was, “devastated at this irreplaceable loss,” while also being grateful that no living person was injured.
Diocese begins reparation prayers following tabernacle theft
A Canadian diocese has begun a month of prayerful reparation following the theft of a tabernacle from its mother church. The Cathedral of St. Catherine of Alexandria in the city of St. Catharines in Ontario was broken into in the early hours of September the 8th. The culprits made off with the church’s tabernacle within which the Blessed Sacrament was reserved. The stolen tabernacle was found the next day, partially submerged in a nearby canal. There was no trace, however, of the Blessed Sacrament.
Archbishop Cordileone to organize Eucharistic procession calling for reopening of churches for public worship
The Archbishop of San Francisco in the U.S. State of California is to lead the city’s Catholics in a Eucharistic procession this Sunday morning in order to pray for a reopening of churches for public worship. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone, along with many of his clergy and lay faithful, will process past the city’s seat of government at U.N. Plaza before making their way to Saint Mary’s Cathedral where Holy Mass will be offered. Earlier this week, the mayor of San Francisco announced that houses of worship will only be allowed 50 people at a religious service and only if that service is held outdoors.

The mother church of the Archdiocese of Manila in the Philippines has reopened after being closed for six months due to COVID-19 restrictions. The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception reopened its doors to worshippers on Wednesday but with a vastly reduced capacity. For the time being, only 80 people will be allowed to attend Holy Mass. That’s 10% of the church’s capacity. Face masks will also be mandatory.
Archbishop Listecki re-introduces obligation to attend Sunday Mass
The Archdiocese of Milwaukee in the U.S. State of Wisconsin has become one of the first dioceses in the United States to re-introduce the obligation to attend Sunday Mass. That ends a six-month lifting of the obligation due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Explaining his decision on the diocesan website, Archbishop Jerome Listecki of Milwaukee said that those faithful who can attend Sunday Mass should now attend Sunday Mass and that not to do so is a mortal sin. He reminded people, though, that those who have good reason not to attend Sunday Mass are still dispensed from their obligation.
Bishop of Portsmouth urges faithful to return to church
The Bishop of Portsmouth in England has issued a pastoral letter to the lay faithful of his diocese urging them to return to church for Holy Mass and private prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Entitled “Come back to me says the Lord”, the two-page letter by Bishop Philip Egan proposes that, as humans, we not only have bodily need but spiritual needs too.
Shalom World launches new channel dedicated to prayer
Shalom World this week launched a new television channel dedicated to prayer around the clock. It’s called SW Prayer and it will broadcast Holy Mass throughout the day as well as other pious devotions such as Eucharistic Adoration; the Holy Rosary; and the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. The new channel was unveiled this week on three different continents.
