How to do the Lindy turn, or 'swing out'

Lindy hop's main move, the Lindy turn, is a very difficult move, but when you dance it right, it feels flipping marvellous. A tutorial.

Growing up as a girl, dance classes I’ve had were all a source of frustration and stress because I’m clumsy and graceless. Yet I can really appreciate how Lloyd puts effort into not overwhelm a beginner. You’re a really good teacher.

Recommendation: when teaching a pattern, always, always demonstrate the pattern with a partner first. Then and only then begin teaching the individual footwork and hand and body moves. It is helpful to us students to be able to begin with the end in mind.

Well done, sir! The Lindy Turn/ Basic/ Swing Out took me a couple of years to feel comfortable with, another couple of years to fine tune, and the last 15 or so years to share the joy that is dancing to beautiful, happy music. Keep on swinging! As Frankie said, "A one, a two..."

I'd like to think this is the opposite of what Lloyd often discusses, which tends to be history with a relatively heavy focus on warfare. However, it's not. Rather, this is the different side of the same coin. A perfect balance. Today, he doesn't discuss conflict or war. He educates us on love.
