President Biden announces plans to run for re-election in 2024

President Biden has announced his run for a second term today, despite seven in ten Americans thinking it is time for him to hand over power to the next generation.

After spending the weekend with aides at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland, Biden, 80, is ready to say he will stand for re-election next year. He is already the oldest man ever to serve as president, and would be 86 at the end of a full second term in 2029.

A video confirming his candidacy has been released on the fourth anniversary of his announcement in 2019 that he intended to challenge Donald Trump for the White House.

Polls indicate that the two men will face each other again, despite the match-up being deeply unpopular with voters. A recent poll for NBC News showed that 70 per cent of voters did not want Biden to stand again. Significantly, 51 per cent of Democrat voters shared that opinion.
