Ohio Woman Arrested for Leaving Kids Alone While at Work

Shaina Bell, a 24-year-old mother, was arrested and charged with child endangerment for leaving her children at a nearby motel so that she could go to work. We weigh in and discuss what role the color of her skin played in her arrest.

I was that woman 10yrs ago. I was in constant fear that someone would snitch me out and I'd lose my daughters so you ladies are so awesome for talking about this. I don't understand why there's no support system for struggling single Mkms or Dads. To me this is the pandemic that gives birth to the current social pandemic going on in America nowadays. I was a latchkey child, I was left alone at 8 years old with my sister who was 6/7 at the time. Our mom was the best mom who worked minimum wage and couldn’t afford a babysitter but needed to feed us. This mom is trying to be a hero, she doesn’t deserve to be arrested.

All of our parents would've been arrested in the 80's and 90's. We were all latchkey kids.

Jeannie hit the nail on the head. The solution isn’t letting parents leave their kids at home alone. The solution is raising the minimum wage so they can afford childcare & so that everyone can have a living wage.

I don’t think single parents should be arrested for situations like this. She needs to work to make money to support the kids she left at home. 10 year olds are more than capable of taking care of themselves and even looking after their siblings. This is so unfair

I definitely agree with Jeannie. This is underlining issue of minimum wage. She is in Ohio which has a minimum wage set at about $8. That is too low. Although Ohio is extremely affordable, it ain't that affordable and especially for a single mother

I think people truly don’t understand how hard it is for single parents especially ones that don’t have the village to leave their kids... yes latchkey kids are a real thing but sometimes you have to make a way out of no way and do what u can... my issue is the dad who had the nerve to call the police on her instead of taking the kids with him while she went to work... something just don’t feel right to me

She's 24, that means she had her first child when she was 14. So she was a child raising a child, and so the cycle repeats itself. I feel so bad for the 10 year old. The type of curses people put on their children and they don't even see it.

I was a latchkey kid. I was left home since I was 8. My sisters were 10 and 6. This might be a cultural thing. I feel like in the northeast, kids are given more freedom. You see kids riding on the bus by themselves. Whereas, here in the south, it would be crazy to see that here. At least, where I live

I completely understand that times are hard, but leaving a ten-year-old to watch a two-year-old is so dangerous. Yes, someone was checking on them every hour, but an accident can happen in seconds. I pray that the donations help Shaina secure child care while she is at work.

She got a room for them and went to work. She didn't starve them, she wasn't beating them, didn't leave them in no car or at a friends she got a room. Ya all do realize theirs a reason she couldnt or wouldn't ask her family for help.

Why is no one speaking to the issue of the father obviously being available to care for his children. This is a common trend with mothers having the privilege to ostracize father's and getting sympathy and help to do it. He was available when she was arrested. So it's safe to assume he could have been available to care for his children while she was at work. She didn't 'have" to leave those children alone.

I cant believe you guys are acting like leaving a 10 year old child with a 2 year old baby is okay. Come on now. Yes its horrible the mom was put in this predicament, we need to help people in this situation. But do not act like leaving children in a motel room alone is okay and they only arrested her because she is a black woman.

She’s has a two year old home with no adult supervision. No matter the race, people will go to jail for child endangerment. This isn’t about her being black.
