Changing SQL Server System Collation without reinstalling

Changing SQL Server collation after the install isn't fun but here are two examples of how to do that without reinstalling SQL Server again.

Both of these examples will work on SQL Server 2014 to 2019 I haven't tested on earlier versions as those are out of support.

Tried both methods, but collation doesn't change after server restart, it remains to Latin1_General_CI_AS . What could be the cause of that, thanks

I too have user databases in development environment, but the collation of them is different from the system databases.

If I use the 2nd method to change the collation will there be any corruption? I understood that it will change collation for system and user db and that is fine for me.

Please assist

I discovered your 1st method does not work if you remove SAPWD from the syntax. Nothing would happen and there would be no update/produce for summary.txt in Logs. To make this work I had to include an SAPWD with the rest of the line.

good video! BTW any chance you know how to change collation of single database? Simple alter statement doesn't work as I get dependency errors...

Thanks for the vid:) I've heard stories that changing the collation without using the setup can cause corruption. Have you heard about this? Has it ever happened to you? thx
