The Human Value of Fair Trade

We often hear the term fair trade as it applies to products. But what does that really mean? For Patagonia, it’s the first step in recognizing that products are not simply born in stores, but that they involve the labor of myriad people behind the scenes—people who have the same fears, dreams and desires as the rest of us. Instead of seeing its products merely as commodities, Patagonia embraces fair trade as an opportunity to ensure the well-being of all of its employees by distributing a portion of sales from its fair-trade products back to those who make the garments.

You guys on here need to get some informations about Patagonia. There should be way more companies doing those kind of business policies.

The problem isn't the labor conditions, the problem is the industry itself.

People like me who live in "developed" countries have been raised on the idea that we need to buy more stuff, more clothes, more whatever and that if we don't get new things our lives are going to be worse off---the ultimate lie of consumerism.

This vicious cycle of materialism where we'll never be satisfied until we get the new iPhone, the new North Face jacket (or whatever stupid clothing brand is popular now), the new Amaxon Alexa thing (it honestly boggles my mind how people can rationalize buying such a product) isn't making us any happier---it's making us fucking miserable.

And not only that, the huge carbon footprint created by (mainly) tech and clothing companies to MAKE their products (it's very real, you can do your own research) are contributing (greatly) to the global warming crisis we have on our hands.

Think about that the next time you plan on buying a Patagonia jacket.

Fair Trade should be obligatory! Rich people treating others like replacable tools to gain more money. This absurd should be stopped!

Fair Trade is a crucial step we must take in moving forward. If we ever want to empower the rest of humanity, not just those of us in wealthy nations, we must pay a fair price for the product we're receiving, instead of trying to squeeze out a few dollars in savings at the expense of others.

guys, at least Patagonia give their 10% profit for environmental cause, and encourages other businesses to do the same.

yeah but who can afford patagonia...just slap fair trade on the label and hike the prices up so that rich people can feel better. Wonder where all the rich people buying fair trade get all that money from. Id love to see any of those people wearing the clothing they make rofl.

I dont know that people shouting things here like: "They are slaves, stop it they are still suffering" and "Let's destroy capitalism" does it for fun or they just dont understand how economy and fair trade works
