DURHAM CATHEDRAL HISTORY & TOUR

A tour around the UNESCO World Heritage site of Durham Cathedral, which has stood for over 900 years and is home to the Shrine of St Cuthbert and other holy relics including Saint Oswald's Head and the remains of the Venerable Bede.
After repeated Viking raids in 793, the monks fled the Holy Island of Lindisfarne in 875, carrying Saint Cuthbert's relics with them and had to continually move the body around the North of England to stop it falling into the hands of the Vikings. The monks finally stopped in Durham and building of the Cathedral started in 1093, replacing the city's previous 'White Church', which was the initial resting place of St Cuthbert. Pilgrims from all over the world came to Durham Cathedral to worship at the Shrine of St Cuthbert, bringing gold, silver and precious jewels. I take a full tour of the cathedral; climbing the 325 steps to the top of the Cathedral Tower, looking back at the Cathedral history, from the Vikings to Oliver Cromwell and Harry Potter, we also see the majestic 7 metre Earth installation ‘Gaia’, which is a giant illuminated globe installation by UK artist Luke Jerram, reflecting on the importance of caring for nature. A fantastic morning looking around one of England's greatest treasures Durham Cathedral!

WOW! Just sitting and looking at the holographic Earth would be enough for me! That is awesome! I have a 56-inch chest and wide shoulders. I don't think that I would fit in the stairway toward the top of the cathedral. Luckily, I have you to show me. Joy and I are not "church" people but we would love to visit that someday. You are very talented in producing these historically-based videos.

Incredibly beautiful cathedral! What a cool video with your history lesson and that you live so nearby with your own history of visiting. Wow harsh punishment if you can’t make an end, but rightfully so! It’s so neat about the Viking occupation and the Potter movies. I’d love to visit this cathedral! Durham cathedral looks gorgeous and has a heck of a history in its past!! Just a couple of steps to get to the top then! The earth installation is just stunning. The cloisters are always my favourite part of a cathedral, love that HP was filmed there. What an awesome view from the top.
