Plot
Hanamichi Sakuragi is a delinquent and the leader of a gang. Sakuragi is very unpopular with girls, having been rejected an astonishing fifty times. In his first year at Shohoku High School, he meets Haruko Akagi, the girl of his dreams, and is overjoyed when she is not repulsed or scared of him like all the other girls he has asked out. Haruko, recognizing Sakuragi's athleticism, introduces him to the Shohoku basketball team. Sakuragi is reluctant to join the team at first, as he has no prior experience in sports and thinks that basketball is a game for losers because his fiftieth rejection was in favor of a basketball player. Despite his extreme immaturity and fiery temper, proves to be a natural athlete and joins the team, mainly in the hopes of impressing and getting closer to Haruko.

Later on, Sakuragi realizes that he has come to actually love the sport, despite having previously played primarily because of his crush on Haruko. Kaede Rukawa—Sakuragi's bitter rival (both in basketball and because Haruko has a massive crush, albeit one-sided, on Rukawa), the star rookie and a "girl magnet"—joins the team at the same time. Not long after, Hisashi Mitsui, a skilled three-point shooter and ex–junior high school MVP, and Ryota Miyagi, a short but fast point guard, both rejoin the team and together these four struggle to fulfill team captain Takenori Akagi's dream of winning the national championship. Together, these misfits gain publicity and the once little-known Shohoku basketball team becomes an all-star contender in Japan who gained a popularity after defeating one of the powerhouse highschool teams at Interhigh.

Mitsuyoshi Anzai (安西 光義 Anzai Mitsuyoshi) is the coach of the Shohoku High School basketball team, and one of the best coaches in Japan. Even the coaches of other teams call him "Anzai-sensei" with respect. His calm and collected attitude contrasts with the temper he had in the past as a demanding college coach, earning him the nickname, "White-Haired Devil".

Background
During Coach Anzai's days of being a college basketball coach, a talented player named Ryuji Yazawa trained under him. Anzai held him in high regard, but Yazawa was frustrated with Anzai's tough training, and left for the United States against Anzai's wishes. His subsequent death in a car collision shook Anzai, and precipitated his transformation from the "White-Haired Devil" to the "White-Haired Buddha", as well as causing him to resign from college basketball coaching.

Personality
He has changed drastically from being the very strict "White-haired Devil" to the "White-haired Buddha with a lighter personality, probably because of Yazawa's demise. Sakuragi always calls him, "Oyaji" (old man) and has the habit of jiggling the fat in his chin and belly whenever he's hyped, which makes the others, Mitsui in particular mad at him, as that is considered disrespectful. However, Anzai appears to tolerate this and has not reprimanded Sakuragi for his behavior. Anzai did punish the 4 players (Mitsui, Miyagi, Sakuragi, and Rukawa) who are involved in the fight against Mitsui's gang by keeping them on the bench during the first Inter High game against Miuradai High School.

He is also a very charismatic person, as he gave Mitsui the confidence to never give up until the match is really over, which enabled Mitsui to win the match in his middle school days and join Shohoku because of Anzai's inspiring words. He even motivated Rukawa and inspired him to become the number 1 basketball player. He even motivated Sakuragi in practicing 20 000 jump shots, and was also responsible for Sakuragi's determination and resolve during the match against Sannoh, as Sakuragi thanked him and told him that he was finally able to change the game to be decisive needed thanks to his words.

When Akagi, Mitsui, Miyagi, Kogure and Rukawa are having a school camp in Shizuoka, Anzai trains Sakuragi in how to make a jump shot similar to a 3-point shot as he tells him to make a 20,000 shots which he successfully does with the assistance of Sakuragi's gang and as part of the camp. This training that Anzai makes is a favor after Sakuragi rescued him on time when he suffers a heart attack.

His appearance and the trademark Santa Claus-like laugh (Ho ho ho) seemed like Santa Claus was his main reference.

When he was a player, he was a great shooter, as shown when he beat Sakuragi in a shooting contest, then later taught him to shoot around the post, which helped him develop a hot spot (45 degree on the right side high post).

He lied to his friends, he lied to basketball, He lied to himself, but he can't lied to coach Anzai!

I feel this. For a young man, it only takes that 1 postive male role model in your life to steer you in the right direction and keep you out of trouble.

This scene is heartwarming. No matter how many times I repeat it, I always cry 😭 his respect to Coach Anzai is immense! Just by seeing him, Mitsui lets go of his pride and stubbornness and admitted to his live long passion of basketball 🥺🥺

Wow, didnt expect to have teary eyes after watching this for so many times, but I was in a somewhat same situation. 20 years ago, I was a star in high school basketball. MVP for NSW state basketball, was on top of my game. I was playing basketball literally every single day for 2, 3 hours. Then one day in a pick up game, I was killing it, then one opposing team player came flying n knee the side of my knee as I went for a rebound. It snapped my leg, i torned ACL, MCL, basically everything, I couldnt walk for 9 months. and as soon as I recover, I had to learn to walk again, and my doctor warned me that my injury was so severe that they used up all ligament and any further injury is not be repair-able. I brushed it off at the time, and as soon as I got to a point where I can walk normally, I got back to the court. But the mental part of it is really something i did not expect I would encounter, everytime I jumped, my mind immediately look to avoid any danger when landing. I tried to work through it, and when i got in a pick up game, I knew I was done. When I shoot, and theres a defender, my mind is not about the shot, its about his leg, I want to avoid landing on its leg. When I go in for rebound, I just couldnt get myself to I left basketball after that, which was very sad for me. Cuz my "career" ended with a finals OT 2 point lost in state championship Alot of expectation was for me to go back n win it all. But not gonna

I relate so much to Mitsui, I used to play basketball in middle school and I had a lot of potential but I suffered a severe ankle injury in eighth grade and I ended up quitting basketball. Sometimes I wonder what would’ve happened if I never stoop playing. This scene almost made me cry when I read the manga

Mitsui joined Shohoku because of Teacher Anzai who he respected most in his life. But he felt disappointed because of the injuries made him cannot play basketball..After giving up basketball he turned to a bad student and jealous of Miyagi's basketball abilities. So he decided to ruin the whole basketball team. But Teacher Anzai returned to the training ground. Mitsui remembered what Teacher Anzai said 3 years ago. Mitsui felt sorry and cried in front of Teacher Anzai and want to join the team.
I cry in this episode because of this touching moments.

These clasic moments from a sports manga will always be the most emotional for me.

This scene is why I think everyone should at least start with the anime and not the manga. It's so incredible.
