Here's Why We Love The New 2024 BMW X4!

Versatile as they are, typical SUVs aren’t for everyone. Their boxy design helps maximize interior and cargo space, yet falls short on style and flair. Not the X4! The eye-catching teardrop-style roofline, combined with the sporty close-to-sedan handling and exciting performance make the 2024 BMW X4 the swiss army knife of cars. Here’s why we love it so much!

Sleek Design

The X4 is the good-looking guy every girl dreams of going to prom with. It is based on the more familiar BMW X3, but ditches the conventional SUV shape for a sporty fastback style, a much more muscular body and some sexy BMW kidney grilles that give the whole SUV a very appealing look. So, if you think the X3 is too dull and uninteresting, and you don’t mind sacrificing a little bit of cargo space for it, then the X4 is the right choice for you.

And you may want to act fast because we don’t know much about the future of the X4 beyond the 2024 model year. The X3 will receive a full redesign next year, but the German Manufacturer hasn’t confirmed a new X4 in the foreseeable future. The fully electric iX4 is currently in development for 2026-2027, and that leaves the gas-fed X4 with an uncertain future.

As for its main rivals, the X4 competes with the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe, the Audi Q5 Sportback and the Volvo C40 Recharge. The Range Rover Velar is a bit in the middle between coupe and boxy, so we wouldn’t include it on the list of competitors. What we would do, though, is put the X4 at the top of the list. Here’s why!

Standard all-wheel drive

You don’t have to pay extra to get the BMW X4 to drive the four wheels. You get BMW’s xDrive system as standard. And here’s something interesting about this system.

The BMW xDrive is a full-time xDrive system that improves the safety of the vehicle by maximizing its traction on the road. It permanently monitors the speed of each wheel, and can send up to 100 percent engine power to one axle if needed. However, under normal circumstances, the xDrive is a rear-biased all-wheel drive system. Unlike the Audi’s Quattro, the xDrive has a 40:60 split from front to rear. This is what makes the BMW stay true to their legacy, with the car’s rear still feeling a bit twitchy in a tight corner, allowing you to enjoy a bit of sportiness while also staying safe on the road.

Potent and exciting engines

The 2024 X4 offers 4 different power levels, catering to the casual enthusiasts, the hardcore performance seekers and everyone in between.

The base engine is a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder that can dash from zero to 60 mph in about 6 seconds. It bears the xDrive30i badge, and it generates 248 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. Starting at just shy of $56k, the xDrive30i comes equipped with 19-inch alloy wheels fitted with run-flat tires, a sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, and LED headlights with automatic high beams.

Overall, the base xDrive30i will feel sportier and more engaging than its main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 Coupe. While the Benz keeps true to its reputation for class and luxury, the X4 will offer a more exciting experience as the road begins to bend.

The X4 M40i will take the performance to a whole new level. Under the hood, there’s a 3.0 inline-six engine delivering 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. According to BMW, this one can make the 0-60 dash in just 4.4 seconds.

It will also make a bigger hole in your pocket, as you’d have to spend at least $67k to get one. For that money, you get prettier 19-inch alloy wheels, an adaptive sports suspension and high-performance brakes as standard.

So, if what you’re after in an SUV is good handling, braking and acceleration performance, then the M40i is the choice to make.

There are of course 2 more power grades that wear the M badge with pride. The X4 M and X4 M Competition are some truly astonishing beasts that behave like thoroughbred sports sedans.

Under the hood, you’ll also find a six-cylinder, but this time it will deliver 473 horsepower for the M, and 503 horsepower for the M Competition model. These superstars can zip from 0 to 60 mph in 3.9 and 3.4 seconds, respectively. They outclass the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 in both power delivery and handling.

Standard M Sport Suspension

Another thing we love about the X4 is the Standard M Sport suspension. Basically BMW doesn’t want you to pay extra to get their highest-performing suspension system. It’s your choice. If you want a simple, comfier drive, the regular suspension is a no-cost option.
