The Top 5 Colleges In The U.S. | Forbes

To put together Forbes 2022 Top Colleges list, we started with a list of U.S. colleges that educate undergraduates according to their Carnegie Classification—a higher education framework that categorizes institutions based on the types of degrees they offer, their research output and specialty focus. We chose doctoral research universities, master’s universities and colleges and baccalaureate colleges, as well as colleges that offered specialized programs in engineering, business and art.

From there, we looked at colleges that had sufficient data within the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System and College Scorecard—two federal government databases. We also pulled in data from the Seattle-based software and data company PayScale, the Washington, D.C.-based public policy think tank Third Way, the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics, as well as some of Forbes’s own lists. We excluded schools with fewer than 300 undergraduates and spun out the five federal military academies, which operate very differently from the other schools on our list.

The best college was my local community college and state college. Took credits during high school for free, spent 1 yr at community college then transferred and graduated after 2 more yrs at state. Spent a total of 6k after scholarships. Got a degree in computer science. Don’t waste your money at these expensive schools folks

Forbes -- being a business magazine -- may put more emphasis on ROI than other ranking organizations. That may explain the absence of CalTech, UChicago and others.

No particular surprises other than perhaps the absence of Harvard, but it is interesting to hear more about these schools.

Most classes offered can be live streamed. Some M.I.T. lectures are on YouTube.

If you looked at the methodology: Berkeley (and UCLA, which ranked #6), are there because they admit 1000's of Pell and Cal grant students (low/lower income) annually, where Ivies admit low 100's. 56% of in-state students to the UC system pay NO tuition. They also admit 1000's of community college transfers and 1st generation college students and effectively move 1/3 of their students from low income to high and upper incomes. That is the whole purpose of a public university. (Bonus: the UC system had more 2021 patents than the Ivies combined.)

Coming from undergrad and grad school currently, there is no overall top school I’ve realized. Really just depends on major and region you want to work in. Some schools give more opportunities, based off of a multifaceted layer of factors that come into play.

Ha! Free speech at Berkeley? Those days are long gone son. Nice try.

Knowledge is knowledge and they arent teaching anything at Ivy League they dont teach everywhere else and you only get out, what you put in. You can get a better education at a local public college than Harvard, if you put in the effort.

I always thought Harvard and Yale were the equivalent of Oxford and Cambridge, number 1 and 2 every year, I guess perceptions are changing.

they're top because why?

donors said so?
and the people who go there were already rich to begin with, so they're also counted

They’re the most expensive. Don’t have to be a genius to figure that out.

If you’re not ready to start making profits then you should at this moment cease trading because as inexperienced as you are, you’ll end up losing all your funds. Get with a certified professional to assist you in profit making.

Doesn't make sense for Harvard to be outside the top 5, let alone at number 15. Highest graduation rate of 98%, and it has among the best financial aid.
