The reason Apple isn't getting backlash is because the user is explicitly asking Siri to scan the screen and do the task whereas Recall is just taking screenshots all the time. Apple is doing what Google's Circle to Search did, when you summon Circle to search, you are explicitly asking Google to scan your screen and do some action.

The difference is explicit and implicit data access.

I think a lot of the reason people are not freaked out about Siri screen awareness, in addition to apples, general track record. Is that, from my understanding, Siri is only aware of what’s on your screen while it’s on your screen. They are not storing screenshots for months, rather just allowing their on device AI to interact with what’s on the screen currently.

Thank you for mentioning Recall. I had the same thoughts as you as to why Microsoft got a lot of backlash and people don't seem to care about privacy when it comes to Apple. I guess this is why marketing is as much important as the product itself and Apple is the best when it comes to marketing.

All of this aside, why is there no backlash when deleted photos reappeared on iPhones? Why are they still there when they’re deleted? How did they even come back (and from where)? I am very surprised as to how there’s absolutely not much discussed about this. I’m saying this while being a complete Apple device guy

I wouldn’t say crushed, but certainly has made iOS more parity to Android for features and customization. I think they’re overall narrowing the gap when it comes to differences between the two, and it’s overall great for those who are considering switching from Android to iOS. That or satisfying those on iOS who have been wanting more options for so long.

I know this is mostly about the AI aspect of what Apple announced, but I figured I might as well mention the other things they’re bringing with iOS 18 as I find them very good as well.

They simply have different approaches to implementation and presentation. Apple's focus is on marketing, while Google prioritizes functionality. In my opinion, Google's implementation is more versatile. We've already seen Google's features in action, while Apple's is still in the demo stage. Apple's AI may look good on paper, but real-world applications will tell the tale.

What I find interesting is the decision to use OpenAI as a choice but it's also just an integration and what I appreciate about that is if another company does it better then it could usurp OpenAI's position as the alternative siri recommends. This would also be true for if OpenAI does something Apple disagrees with within its core principles (privacy) that it can drop it and move to another company.

Truly, a lot of exciting features were announced at this WWDC. I look forward to seeing how the developer betas advance over time before it hits public release.
