Lewis Hamilton is back on track at Imola to carry out Pirelli tests on 18-inch tires, in use since 2022 on all single-seaters. Tomorrow it will be the turn of Valtteri Bottas, who will be able to return to the track after the big accident on Sunday.
First impressions
Hamilton, even before today's tests, had already expressed concern about the switch from F1 to 18-inch tires. According to the British it could in fact prove to be a step backwards:
“Up until now I have had the feeling that we lose grip when we use this tire, ” he said last year. “I think what we really need in Formula 1 is slightly less downforce and more mechanical grip. A lot of this comes from the tires, in order to reduce the gap between us on the track. With these tires, however, it does not seem that we are going in the right direction ”.
Lewis Hamilton is still in Imola, where he stayed with Mercedes to carry out Pirelli tests on 18-inch tires . To prepare for the Pirelli tests, a W10 had already been adapted in suspension in 2019, to be able to support the lowered tires. The new tires will be in use in the 2022 Formula 1 season, after postponing their introduction from this year to next. The emergency given by the Covid-19 pandemic has in fact delayed their development, thus leading to the postponement of their debut as official tires for F1.
